[Nostalgia] Toys you played with [Fun] (44)

It's probably been a while since you picked up a Luke Skywalker action figure or hauled your Legos out of the closet, but what did you guys play with when you were younger? I'm shooting for age 7-12 or so.

I liked my Star Wars figures, especially the ships and vehicles. I also liked Legos and those glow-in-the-dark round bricks (name eludes me). I'd often build the Legos and whatever the other things are into shapes that could battle my Star Wars dudes ( ^ω^)I even knew how to shape the latter into a Lambda shuttle.

Yeah, Better Blocks sounds familiar. What a tool name though, now that I think about it

I had this awesome toy when I was little. It was a flexible ring of about 8 pyramid-shaped blocks, colored orange and purple on alternating sides, which could be folded together to make all kinds of interesting shapes (cubes, stars, octogons, etc). Sadly, my dog chewed it up, and I can't remember what it was called. It was a Japanese name, I think, and I'm pretty sure it started with 'y'.

I'd really like to have another one. Anyone know what I'm talking about? :(

Rubik's Snake?

10 Name: Anonymous : 2006-07-29 21:36 ID:5Z9m5Kw8

Hm... it was similar, yes, but not identical. This one was actually a ring, connected at both ends.

heh, I had a few of those. oddly enough, I can't recall ever having heard the name.

12 Name: Anonymous : 2006-07-30 02:17 ID:5Z9m5Kw8

DAMMIT

I just want the fucking toy. ;__; I've literally been looking for years.

my pet monster, legos, dinoriders, germs, ghostbusters, ghostbusters, ghostbusters.... get it?

lego, technic lego (they don't really make the stuff anymore) and origami. I used to make little boats with walnut shells and toothpicker woods, and tons of glue.

Also there were these foam puzzles of 6 pieces which fitted inside a frame, or you could make a cube from them. I also remember playing a lot with lego.

I also kept a mineral collection (crystals only) which I still have, but forgot the names of most of the stones (damn). And a lot of lego-ing.

you just described my childhood, except for the walnut shells.

>I also kept a mineral collection

So did I! That's fucking amazing!!

Sit and Spin, up until it got super-dirty and I got too big for it. It'd be nice to have a larger one for myself nowadays.

I'd also take Duplos (like Legos, only four to eight times their size) and play with those, building settings and characters and then making up stories with them. They were mostly copied from shows on Nickelodeon, but with my own characters in them. Before then, I'd build tons of Duplo ducks, line them up, and make up stories about them, having them sing and dance. Did the same thing with Crazy Bones.

I also liked drawing crappy comics, but those aren't toys.

I was really into legos, even though I never had that many (compared to some people). I was also into K'nex on off for a while. Other than that I can't really thing of anything (´・ω・`)

19 Name: 14 : 2006-08-22 10:12 ID:GpZkHbQZ

wow. so how many here did origami

20 Name: Anonymous : 2006-08-22 18:04 ID:9bJsMmAq

>>18

As was I. I never really had enough K'nex to make anything cool, though. I didn't get to buy one of those gigantic ferris wheel sets, or the roller coaster ones. :(

I used to have a Starship Enterprise toy. It was pretty big and made cool noises you know! For some reason the engines were detachable and I would always lose them.

I had those too, they weren't bad. Kinda like the scaffolding version of Legos.

23 Name: Anonymous : 2006-08-23 19:50 ID:Heaven

I may have also had this toy! Did the engines light up when it made sounds?

>>23 Why yes! Yes it did.

Transformers, more than meets the eye.
Voltron voltron voltron.

funny, they are all Japanese, i didn't realize at the time though.

26 Name: Anonymous : 2006-09-08 19:56 ID:gYpj7JYJ

Actually the original Transformers were American. This is a common misconception (probably cause of the robots theme). Whether they influenced Japanese TV or vice versa, I don't know.

>>26
I think shows like "Gigantor" came first, but whether they were even seen in America widely enough to influence Transformers is questionable.

they don't make lego technics anymore? damn, that's a shame. i remember putting things together like the boat and the big space shuttle. i never did put the space shuttle together perfectly though... (´・ω・`)

My cousin had one of the Enterprise-D. It had sounds and lights for phasers, photon torpedoes, warp speed, and impulse engines.

I loved Lego technic, I used to make stuff with crazy mechanisms.

They still make it, but it has changed. Now its mostly oddly shaped pieces which are harder to reuse.

My parents never gave me anything. I played outside with rocks, sand, flowers, etc. I also used to catch bugs and butterflies and make a "zoo" with them :/

I ended up being a toy collector as an adult. I now have around 900 ponies, several dolls, plushies and other toys. Our house is cluttered.

Take notice moms and dads, if you are out there.
Those Barbie dolls and my Little Pony's might seem expensive now... but they will be a hell of a lot more expensive in 20 years when your daughter buys them as "vintage" toys on ebay to make up for a crappy childhood :/

I found your story cute and creepy at the same time. Good job!

40 Name: Anonymous : 2006-09-24 00:48 ID:Heaven

Well it's not so creepy if it's a girl, I guess.

41 Name: Anonymous : 2006-09-24 01:24 ID:9o0cKtwI

I found the story sad and I dunno...wanting you make up your childhood when you are an adult would mean that you are missing out on your adulthood. You won't have any good stories to tell when you are old.

I collect toys now too, mostly Voltes V stuff, and lots of anime stuff. yeah, room is cluttered. i have some powerpuff girls stuff too, i like em o(^o^)o
