I think you're right about it being pop psychology. They're just looking for a reason to explain that which they can't, and so they just decided that the autism spectrum of behaviors suits it well. Yeah, the rain man might be socially impotent, but he makes up for it with his other skills. People aren't necessarily created "equal" in this sense, but there is still a balance maintained.
