What is 'too far'? (8)

Sorry if this is in the wrong board, but I have no idea where to place this.

I was thinking about how people become attached to fictional characters (fanboys, moé, ect.), and the idea that it's alright, as long as they don't take it 'too far'. But how exactly do you define 'too far'? Is it an internal or an external thing? Does it have to affect others or the individual, and how big of an affect does that have to be? If that person was with other like-minded people, can it still be measured in the same way, or is it based on certain contexts?

A common thing I tend to hear is 'if [it] doesn't impede on the individual's ability to function in society'. Suppose the individual is a shut-in or a social outcast. Or what if the individual does their own thing without harming anyone else. Is it still an issue?

Sorry for the tl;dr post, but it's hard for me to succinctly express thoughts.

evangelion gave me a blue hair fetish, and a folder of over 6300 images of rei ayanami. i think "too far" is when i order a rei sex doll or ask a prostitute to wear a blue wig and wear red contacts
