Hay guys,

I am planning a summer trip overseas this next year, and while I have traveled a decent bit, I am still trying to figure out exactly how much money I should save up and how long I should stay. My last trip- when I traveled to Turkey for 2 1/2 weeks- cost about $4,000. However, I'm looking into the possibilities of staying possibly about a month in my desired destination, and I'd like some help figuring out how much I would need.

My destination possibilities are:
First choice- Egypt
Second choice- Sweden
Third choice- Scotland/Ireland

Sooooo... calculating all the costs (plane ticket, food, souvenirs, admission to attractions, bus/subway fare, hotel/hostel fare, etc.) how much would these 3 places cost for a 2-4 weeks?

Peace!

Last summer me and a few friends went to Stockholm for a few days, i went there with 500 Euro worth of Krona to spend on food and such but still had about 150 left over. Admission to museums and food was cheap but we only ate hotdogs. I think its best to have accommodation sorted out before you leave and have the money for it separate from your spending money. i recommend that you stay here http://www.hostelbookers.com/hostels/sweden/stockholm/10040/ if you are planning on going.

NEVER GO TO IRELAND, its a shit-hole PERIOD. Go to Scotland or Wales instead.

Alriiighty, it looks like I'm going to Sweden. I have family in Sweden and some other relatives are going there for the month of August, so I will probably tag along with them. That makes accommodation and some meals free, but here are the expenses I've calculated:

-Plane ticket: US$1,500 (roundtrip Atlanta-NYC-Stockholm and back)
-Eating out/attractions/leisure: $500
-Souvenirs: $500
-Local travel (ferry/subway/bus): $100
-Accomodation: FREE
-Miscellaneous: ???

Overall, I'm saying a conservative estimate of US$2,500-3,000 could get me to Sweden and back. Does that sound reasonable?

Sounds pretty reasonable, but please, reconsider your location of travel. I hate this country.

I loved Sweden the first time I went... beautiful, beautiful place... although I've heard living there is horrifically boring.

Correct. The Scandinavian countries have a high standard of living, but they ARE boring. Having lived in small, fairly poor semi-rural towns, I'd pick them over this decadent piece of shit life I live here. I might just move back to one of those towns.

ONE advantage of living in Sweden.

Your estimate is OK, assuming most of your meals are paid for and you don't plan to drink. Eating out in Sverige (or in Stockholm at least--I hope and assume other parts of the country are somewhat cheaper) is ridiculously, stupidly expensive--hard to get a meal for two in a nice restaurant with a bottle of wine for less than about $150; it is surprisingly easy to spend $400. A beer in a bar costs $9.

In general, expect most things in Sweden to cost about 2.5X as much as they do in the States. If you're going to be eating on your own, or spending a lot of time shopping, you should thus raise your estimate accordingly.
