Apparently, all posts got a unique ID:
9 Name: Anonymous : 2008-01-10 13:04 ID:8II3dH7M
for an example. I was kinda wondering, what does it mean?

Don't think.
waiiiit... what's the point of trip codes then?
Enter "tripcode#tripcode" is the name field. You should get the same exact name and code as this post, but with a different ID. Try it.

Trip codes are persistent. IDs remain the same only for the individual thread, and they also change after a period of time. They exist so people can't do stupid things like argue with themselves.
Sage hides your ID (making it Heaven).
The ID that a poster uses depends on the thread they are posting under and the IP address that they use at that point in time. If the poster's IP address changes over time, their ID will also change over time.
What I've always wanted to know is, does the site have the full IP address for each post stored somewhere in the database, or does it only store the ID and the IP block which the address came from?
I am pretty sure the full IP address is stored.

And the IP will be shown... no idea what that thing would be good for...
On the original 2channel, I've heard that the IP address is only logged in plaintext for the first post in a thread.
The ID is obviously some kind of hash of a thread ID and an IP address. And that means the admin ostensibly can't just extract the IP address from the ID. But, given a specific thread and a selection of possible IP addresses, could he tell whether that post came from that IP address?
Also, why does sage hide the ID?
> But, given a specific thread and a selection of possible IP addresses, could he tell whether that post came from that IP address?
Failing that, if you know the algorithm, the salt and the thread-ID, in the worst case you could brute-force the IP address. I mean there are only 2^32 possible values, that won't take very long to iterate. Think of it as cracking a four-character password.
>>20,22 was a good reason why tripcodes exist, for as long as you keep them long, and not based off words. Go outside and do something, kid.
>>21 a four-character password if each character has 256 possible values. (8 bits per letter). Six-character password is more accurate.
>>19 didn't know that about Heaven, now it makes more sense. One thing I wish sage did, though, was to mark the post in some obvious way rather than adding a "mailto:sage" link that shows up when you mouse over. So if anyone actually provides an email address or URL, nobody notices because "sage" is so much more common, and at that point you might as well just change the whole Link field into a sage checkbox.
I bet there's already a long thread based on a suggestion like this on iichan, but I'm posting it here anyway.

Heaven belongs where sage exists. All other posts will have an ID.
Why you delete post`?
Same reason he throw chip.

Not every sequence of four numbers from 0..255 is a valid IP address either, if you want to split hairs.
