Dane Cook is not the next Jim Carrey. He's good at stand-up, but nothing else. And I hope he's saving his money. Carlos Mencia, on the other hand, is mediocre at best. He perfected that move where his entire act is about how politically incorrect he is. When either one comes into town, I don't pay to see them.

What comics would YOU pay to see? I'll start:

• George Carlin -- 'nuff said.
• Henry Rollins (not really a stand-up but a great speaker.)
• Mitch Hedberg, twice. The first time, he was pretty good. The second time, he was too intoxicated to perform, and the result was a train wreck.
• Greg Behrendt, who opened for Mitch the first time I saw him.
• Stephen Lynch, who was touring with Mitch when he tanked.
• Bob Saget. 'Nuff said. Saget's the man.
• Doug Stanhope, at least four times, in three different venues. The only time he disappointed was when he was at a shitty comedy club where a large corporate group was 20 minutes late, and he had two opening acts that ate up all his time, and he had to cut his set short so the 10:00 crowd could get seated. The other times, he killed.
• Ralphie May, indirectly, as part of a Last Comic Standing taping. None of his set was on the show; he was just keeping us entertained while the judges went over all the contestants who had performed. And he killed. He killed for a crowd that had just spent the last hour and a half watching 27 amateurs perform 3-minute sets. That man has talent.

bill hicks was the only good comedian ever.

Doug Stanhope is better at being Bill Hicks than Bill Hicks:

• Still on drugs, and manages not to burn out on his comedy act the way Hedberg did
• Doesn't rely on 12 minutes of Satan noises to vamp his way through the album.
• Not serious about conspiracy theories. He had the lame, ranty, retarded part of his soul extracted and injected into Joe Rogan.
• Handles hecklers better.
• Is pissed off about things that actually matter. Hicks was pissed off about JFK and the secret shadow government that tells the president what his agenda really is. Stanhope is pissed about prostitution being illegal and having to live with his mom back when that was an issue.
