How to make friends on the internet? (52)

I'm as social on the internet as I am in real life. I've been online for over 6 years, and I think I only made one real friend through all this time.

I'm interested, how did you make friends online? It seems pretty complicated to me. I actually post on a few forums, but I've never attempted to socialize with people on these forums. How do I do that exactly?

BTW, this really is not a cry for help.

Posting on these forums is socializing, just FYI. If you like someone's company ask them for IM info and chat them up. If you're too shy even for IM (I can be that way sometimes), try LiveJournal.
