I actually just noted this hread to my google notebook..

thanks OP for the news I just blogged about sleipnir. It's actually pretty epic - there have been only three browsers for windows up ot this date

39 Name: Anonymous Addict : 2007-10-20 22:47 ID:JUGwGDQr

It's really nice. What are you comparing it to?
Compared to IE, it's slick, simple, clear, fast, safe, and practical. For the longest time, it had such obvious features IE didn't, like tabbed browsing, popUp blocker, and built-in google search bar.
The thing about IE, is that when it finally gets the features, it implements them along with a ton of clutter FF has been good at avoiding.

Aw. I was hoping to see w3m reviewed.

On that note, I just found and fixed a couple form-related w3m bugs that were making LiveJournal's OpenID server not work. w3m put an extra carriage return/newline at the end of URL-encoded form content, and when a form didn't specify an action URL (thus implying the current URL), w3m would strip off query strings (so it would post to /whatever.pl instead of /whatever.pl?this=that&id=whatever&etc=etc). And I have an old workaround in my copy to make ".domain.com" (valid for all subdomains) cookies work, not a fix because I don't really understand the issue there.

I should post my fixes on the w3m list or something, but I'm lazy.

I like CLI browsers for compat testing (Well, if it's reasonably useable in a CLI browser, then it's usually reasonably useable in a screen reader and in older browsers, too), and for when there just isn't any other way I can browse the internet (Not every machine needs X).

Other than that, nice and bloated GUI pls. I like my firefox extensions.

CLI browsers support CSS and JavaScript lately anyway.

142 Name: Anonymous Addict : 2008-10-07 11:13 ID:3TWYLhQ2

People had a problem with the MS monopoly because they intentionally suppressed competition, and that left every Windows user with a fail browser. Firefox's insistence on adherence to standards, and stress on functionality forced MS to make versions after IE6 almost usable. Google hasn't suddenly stripped all search results for alternative web browsers.

There are other good reasons to question or criticize Google, but afaik they don't have monopolistic influence exerted in any tech sphere.

As for the application ID, Google points to their manager Brian Rakowski, who at the Chromium project issues site states:
"There’s a little confusion here that I’d like to clear up. There are two IDs being discussed. They are stored and used separately.

First of all, there is an installation ID (iid) which is created at install time to de-dup install counts. This is necessary to accurately count the number of successful installations that have occurred. The iid is generated randomly (not based on any other information) and is deleted in the next update check after first run.

There is a second ID called the clientID which is used for the user metrics service. This is an opt-in service that lets users send usage statistics to Google so that we can learn how the product is being used for the sake of making improvements. It helps us answer questions like, “Are people using the back button?” and “How common is it that people click the back button repeatedly?” Users can always update their preference about sending usage statistics on the “Under the Hood” tab of options."

I just tried Opera. Why the hell do people babble on about how great it is? It's really not very good. It's got rendering issues, offers extremely limited functionality in comparison with firefox's plugins, and very few keyboard bindings (how do you switch to the 2nd tab? oh I get it, you have to click on it, guess alt-2 isn't good enough)

Firefox sucks but it definitely sucks less than the rest of the browsers.

I use Firefox, but specifically the indev version dubbed "Nightly." It keeps getting faster with each update and the addons, the customization, security, and the lack of google spyware make it so fucking useful. Plus there is the bonus of it being open source.

On older computers I use Midori. Which is like a stripped down Firefox that uses Webkit instead of Gekko to render pages. It is pretty cool and uses very little ram while at the same time having some of the functionality of more popular Firefox addons built-in.

Chrome/Chromium is a good browser at its core, but people shy away from it because of the whole spyware deal. Which is totally understandable. Has some addons but not as many as Firefox. Zero customization.

Opera is very good browser like Firefox is. It is fast and light on resources. But there is no real addon community to the thing other than Adblock. Not a lot of customization, but not as little as Chrome. It has features/utilities like Firefox does but also a bunch of uneeded ones that they could easily just take out and cut down on a lot of code. Sadly, not open source.

IE and Safari are outdated and pretty much inside jokes with programmers, techies, and people who work in the industry. Normals still use them because they do not actually know what a web browser is, or that you can use a different one if you choose to. They just buy their new computer and think "How do I get on the Internet? I click Internet Explorer! Or do I double-click it?"

Outside of those people, I do not know why anyone would use anything other than Firefox or Opera. Those are the two best browsers.
