Conventional Identity Forums and Hiding (16)

Most conventional boards with fixed account identities, shunning of sockpuppetry etc. that are based on phpBB or similar shite are giving you the option to "hide" your online status, so that it doesn't appear anywhere on the forum.

I usually hide. I do this because I don't want people to know when I am online, mostly in a lame attempt to disguise how much time I spend browsing the forum but also because I want to be able to relax, have some time-off lurking and not be hit up by people through privat messages the minute they see me going online.

How do you feel about "hiding"? Do you do it? What's your rationale? Let's start a "hidden users" club!

I do it mostly because I feel paranoid about people reading my profile and old posts. I don't like how people on forums can link things that I said a long time ago to me personally and hiding decreases the chances of that. Or something. In fact, I would post without a name or postcount if I could.

>>3 On the one hand, I agree with you. Sometimes we say something stupid and we shouldn't have to look over our shoulders because of it. On the other hand, I don't think it's right that somebody can just spout any bullshit they like because they happen to either be drunk or just plain stupid.

Cases in point, >>2 and >>4.
