Yet another e-love dilemma. (15)

I'm sort of new to this whole love thing. I've never really liked a girl because I never leave the house to socialize. I graduated high school early just to get away from my nonexistent social life. Now I've started to live like a hermit of sorts until I can fathom up enough energy to go to college.

Besides that, I've always hated people. I usually lurk in IRC chats all day complaining about how the world is corrupt and how X or Y sucks. People hate me and call me "Mr. Complainer" even though all I say is true. No one listened to me or agreed for the most part. I hated almost everyone in the channel until I met this friend of one of the chat-goers. For identity protection, let's use something somewhat similar and say her screen name is Lynx.

Lynx came in the channel after some time. I started my routine about complaining and she listened. She'd laugh and agree with me that Tom Hanks sucks or whatever. This went on for a few weeks. I slept in so I could be up when she was. I had grown attached to her but was too afraid to admit that I had a developing thing for her.

Weeks go by, and she finally tells me that she likes me "beyond just a friend." I tell her I reciprocate these feelings, and she is relieved to hear this. She asks to see a picture of me, so I send her a picture of my 18-year-old self. She says I look "cute" and proceeds to tell me that her camera was "missing" so she'll get me one eventually.

When I asked her how old she was, she promptly replied "twenty-three." I was instant taken aback by that. It also turned out that she lived only a few hundred miles away. I'm really girl-shy, and this age gap is iffy.

This girl shares a lot in common with me, but I'm so young compared to her. I don't know what my parents would think of such a gap. She is ideal for me in many ways and I think she may be one of a kind.

Should I go beyond this and meet Lynx? I haven't seen a picture but I have heard her voice over VOIP chat. She doesn't sound like some obese, aged, male rapist. She sounds rather cute. I want to meet her, but my parents would get curious and probably would throw me out if they found out. I've never held a job, and they offered me a free ride to college if I "obeyed their rules."

What should I do?

One, wait until you get a picture to meet her. That's really important.

Buy and send her a webcam if you have to, but don't go to meet her without seeing a picture. Preferably, you would want to see more than one picture of her, taken at different times. The better for you to see how she truly looks.

Two, how long has it been since you two met? How much do you supposedly "know" about her? Things that sound realistic, although you can't verify them, such as her talking about her job, school, etc?

Three, e-stalk her. If you don't know them already, try to find out if she has any blogs and read them. Generally, try to find out as much as possible.

The point here is to learn as much about her as possible, to possible learn stuff that you would know if you knew her in real life, before you make any kind of decision. You can't decide simply on how she speaks to you.

Lastly, online love isn't impossible. I've known 4 couples who got together online (3 via IRC), and are still going strong. I was, and am still sort of skeptical about meeting people online, but now I believe it could work, if done right.

Anyone can sound cute.
You totally need to wrestle a picture from her. Just so you know what you're getting into. It may sound vain and shallow, but the internet is serious business.

Yah, very much agree with the picture thing, and its very important to "research her" like what the other one advice, this is internet it is really possible that she might be (just like what you wrote) some obese, aged, male rapist. By the way, I also think Tom Hanks sucks! I hope this turns out good though..

I hate to be the super liberal, "THERE'S BEAUTY IN EEEEEEVERYTHING" type of person but most of the time the internet ugly stereotype has more bark than bite. I've seen some gross people on the internet, but not anymore in real life.

Oh yeah, if people don't like you in that channel there's also an off chance it's one of the channel girls fucking with you because you've pissed them off too many times. If I were you I'd wait on it or just tell her you'd like to see a picture before meeting her in person to confirm she's not a 40 year old rapist. There's no harm in that.

And you don't have to tell your parents, even if they are offering to pay for your education. Make something else up.

People you meet on the internet do generally have a higher percentage of being 'ugly' because they do not feel apt enough to socialise in the outside world or because they sit on their ass all day.

Chatting on the net = low confidence = 'unattractive'

unattractive = problems = emo = more problems = tendency to change

Depending on what sort of person you are, being physically attractive may or may not be important you... however, please take care in throwing your feelings around on the internet because internet relationships are prone to fluctuations. They're quite delicate since like one week without contact could practically mean you're dead to her.

camera missing? she actually say "missing?" convenient excuse, no?

why you wanna taste unknown fruit from far away if you not even can peel banana properly? There's supermarket in your town, still you wanna buy fruit on ebay? Silly kid haha!

Frigid onanoko no know though, like entrepreneur spirit, make you strong, yes! Tentatively advise do it. Could be fun!

It your decision, what price ready to pay? evaluate against payoffs. You really need parents? there public transport can use? You have own money? earn it if have to, get driverslicense if need to, go for it.

bye now

I would like to point out that even if the things are true, you're still complaining. the truthfullness of what you say determines if you are a liar or not. it does not determine if you are complaining.

just FYI...well i don't live like a hermit and date people in real life but i do use IRC alot and have been for 6 years. (i'm 17!) i've known someone for 6 years and we recently started to like each other and last month, he came to visit. yes, we did a bit of mic and he saw like, 2 pictures of me. and i could've been a creepy nasty person but well, he came and that wasn't the case. he then came a month later and we were both honest about our identity and things like that...and yeah, we dating now :x

NOT ALL INTERNET PEOPLE ARE CREEPY. you are on the net right? and you're normal? do you think you are the only normal person on the internet?

anyway, i think you should exchange pictures. not because you want to see if she's cute, but if she's hiding from a camera, something is probably up. disposable cameras are cheap and shipping pictures is cheap. if she can't afford it, pay for it :x
