I'm curious what you think (though I fear the DQNish responses this thread will get.)
Personally, I've never experienced it, so I can't say for sure, but I'm leaning toward the belief that infatuation at first sight exists, but it takes work to develop that into love.
The only thing you can get at first sight is desire, love need time to develop.
(indeed, let's just keep those DQN things away from here, I much prefer intelligent discussion)
I don't think it happens either, unless you already know the person from phone/internet/whatever, and seeing them in person locks it down...
Someone I know had an interesting thought, that there was lust at first sight, but that love at first sight probably didn't exist... I'm inclined to believe in that, as well, again, unless you already know the person, or at the very least, know about the person (what their personality and such are like) beforehand.
love means that you love and adore them dispite their faults and bad habits. How can you know about these faults just from seeing someone? I agree you can have lust for someone. You can see someone and have a want to get to know them and maybe even want to spend your life with them (etc) but this is only skin deep (mind the pun)
Love takes time to fester and until you can truly appreciate someone for who they are, all they are, i wouldnt define it as love.

Too true.
I think everything has been said.
You might be able to constrew the phrase to work, depending on how you define love. If you think of love as being some definite state of being, then it probably fails, as described above. However, if you think of love as being an experience, then the phrase has some merit (I think). This saying usually comes about during times of reflection. For example, happily married couples, with children, grandchildren, etc., usually can recall the instant they saw eachother. At that point, they may, or may not, have been in a state of lust, yet they recognize it as the beginning of their life, or their love. I also believe, being a man, that many men follow a process of setting a dream, and then, fulfilling that dream. If this is true of women as well, then love at first sight may refer to the circumstance whereby a man and woman simulataneously set eachother as their dreams(lifelong) upon seeing eachother. In any case I was finally there, to sit on my throne, as the prince of her heart.
>>7 ^construe (i totally fucking knew that)
I would say as something you feel, yes its possible, you might feel it and no matter how unreasonable it is, its what you feel, it would be looking down at life if you said it is ONLY lust at first sight. I believe it is a coincident however.
..well, that was quick.
If you mean love, as "fall in love", it happened to me when I was 16. My face turned red and I had vertigo. I had never talked to or seen the girl before. And I didn't try to talk to her after. I don't even know her name. No regrets. But I know love at first sight is possible.
Allow me to shed some light on the subject. In the context we use "love at first sight", love refers to the sensation of 'being in love', which is a feeling of euforia of variable strenght, tied to being close to or thinking of, someone who has, for one reason or another, caught your affection.
So, love at first sight definately exists, but might not be so strong as love that has built up towards someone you've been heavily colored by over time.
The love mentioned above should not be confused with the state of mind of the same name, unrelated to chemically based affection and more often driven by conscious, moral choice, where you act in a loving manner, not forced on by emotions but a sense of right and wrong. It often coexsists with the love mentioned above to create extremely durable relationships. This however is a dying phenomenon.
I loved my penis at first sight.
I sighted my love at first penis.
I penor'd my first love in her sight
