I'm not sure if this should go in this board, but does anyone here have any suggestions on a good sci-fi manga besides the gundam serieses? (is that even a word? ^^;;) It doesn't have to be in English, (though I would prefer it in English, seeing as how my Japanese is very, very bad!) and please provide a place online to purchase if you know one. Thanks for any suggestions!

I'm assuming you mean space opera and such, and not just anything that happens in the future or has robots. A few things come to mind:

  • Crest of the Stars (Originally a series of novels, then anime, then manga. Translated.)
  • Luna Shaft (Geneshaft is very, very loosely based on this manga. Not translated.)

There is a distinct lack of good space opera manga, though.

What about Galaxy Express 999?

Oh yeah, and Captain Future - but I don't think there's a manga.

Hah - apparently there has been a comic, a German one of crappy quality produced for the German dub of the Japanese TV series (キャプテンフューチャー) which again was based on an American pulp magazine series.

Yes, I did mean space opera, sorry. ^^;; I'd also like to know if any good cyberpunk-style mangas have been made. Heard of any?

For cyberpunk, Ghost in the Shell is of course the classic. Appleseed isn't too far off the mark, either.

I'd recomend Tsutomu Nihei's stuff too. Blame! and its prequel NOiSE, both are cyberpunk AND great mangas. Also his new title, Biomega, which kinda seems to have some subtle connection with Blame! but the setting is not that far in the future.

Don't forget Patlabor.

Thanks everyone, really. I'll try and get all your suggestions, but I'm not sure where I'd get the money to buy all these! ^^;; If someone could please condense these into the very best, I'd be very grateful. I'll get the others when I get the money.

I think all of them are pretty good. Maybe you could narrow down what you are specifically looking for?

Re: Biomega
Someone shoot that bear. I have no idea what Nihei was thinking.

The text is also horribly hackneyed. Nihei really needs a writer. He's a great artist, but his writing skills are total utter shit. It looks like he didn't learn his lesson with Snikt.

Biomega is an entertaining read, but it'll never be anything like Blame at this rate.

I'd just like to see other people's lists for the best here. So far, my list for sci-fi/space opera/cyberpunk goes something like this:

1) Akira
2) Ghost in the Shell
3) Blame
4) Appleseed
5) Gundam

Any changes or additions before I start buying stuff?

Ah, geez. I forgot Gunnm/Battle Angel Alita. Highly recommended.

Oh yes. It's pretty grotesque, but it's not just shock for shock's sake, it does have depth too.

Would PLANETES qualify?

I have no idea, but M-S did a few chapters some time back, so you can take a look at them and decide for yourself.

Well, I'm not Nihei, but I make an excuse instead of him.
Biomega was serialized in "Weekly Young Magazine". Did you
read this magazine? Now This magazine's reader is not manga otaku. They are ..well..(it is difficult to explain in a single phrase) DQN, Furyou... Every week they read and throw it away. They don't need a philosophical difficult story.
It seems to me that Nikei tried to match his favor to reader's favor.
I think Nihei need a environment that allow writing freely and have enough time. Weekly Young Magazine was hard to Nihei...

Now He start new series of Blame in "Bessatsu Morning".
I think this magazine is good for him.
so maybe I can recommend to you this series.

My favorite mangas are:

  1. Turumoku dokushinryo(which describes a man's everyday life)
  2. Slam Dunk (which deals wich a basketball club)
  3. Touch (which is about a baseball club)

2 and 3 are both highly famous mangas in Japan.
Maybe they have been translated into English but
I'm not sure 1 has.

(This is the first time I've posted except for the nihongo board. So I'm a bit nervous.)

Thank-you for the information. They're all interesting points, particularly the part about a second Blame.

How does Bessatsu Morning compare to Afternoon? Similar target audience?
