One of the few composers that puts out some quality anime songs that can be accepted by the mainstream.
My all time favourites got to be
Voices - Macross Plus
Somehow I like the english version of it and thats technically wasn't even done with Yoko Kanno's involvement I think.
The Garden of Everything - Rahxephone
Strangers - Wolf's Rain
Shitty series but great music
Yoko Kanno, is a very very good composer. But, her lyrics on the other hand, are well. Interesting to say the least. For instance "Where Does This Ocean Go?" (From SAC OST), here is some of the lyrics: ".. who wants to see a show, his head looks like a melon. It turns into a melon..." WTF?
Other than that, anything from the SAC OST's have been kickass.
That piano-tune in Mind Game.
Everything in Napple Tale, but especially "Midori no Hane"
Hmm, I'm not really sure what's composed by Yoko Kanno and what's not, but I've heard that the songs Sakamoto Maaya sings are mostly composed by Yoko Kanno, so here are my favourite Sakamoto Maaya songs and let's hope that they're by Y.K.:
Koucha (don't know where that's from)
Hikari no naka e (from Escaflowne, I think)
Tune the Rainbow (from RahXephon)
>>4 is a wise man.
I've recently come to the conclusion that the Arjuna soundtrack is some of Kanno's best work.
DEFINITELY "The Garden of Everything."
Easily her best work ever.
shoujo kakumei arjuna has also some great stuff too... I also am very fond of the ESCAFLOWNE movie soundtrack she did with Hajime Mizoguchi.
Also, as far as favourites go, "Tell me what the Rain knows," with maaya sakamoto, from the WOLF'S RAIN soundtrack.
Most kanno stuff = good.
What no BEBOP yet!.
The Bebop soundtrack is very good , and SOC is also good.
I really got into the GITS SAC soundtracks.
i can't be cool and we can't be cool are really good.
I like Max Bomber Girl.
Escaflowne Yoko Kanno + Hajime Mizoguchi, my no 1 favourite. Cowboy Bebop.
In most musics, she actually loves to coloborate with Maaya Sakamoto.
Most of her works are lovable. She did some midi soundtracks for some very old-school games tho. I can't remember the nae of the game, it was a sea-farer 16-bit pc game.
Turn A Gundam - Moon's Cocoon
IMO, her works from the Brain Power'd OST is very underrated.
-Light of Love
-Blue Tone
-Ephemera
-Flow
-Crossing
It's actually "His head looks like a melon, he turns into an alley and stops to blow his nose".
Fairly comprehensible, but the singer's accent makes it kind of hard to pick out some words :)
I still haven't heard The Garden of Everything OTL I must find this somewhere...
IMO Kanno's best soundtrack is the Arjuna one. Earth Resonance is absolutely great, and so is Awakening. There is a nice variety in tracks there, but they still fit very well in the show. You can kind of feel the show through the tracks... the vocal tracks are also great, I love Bike and Mameshiba but the absolute best is Kuuki to Hoshi. One of my top Kanno songs. That feeling of fragility, sadness, loneliness and distance couldn't have come across better to me. I love the instrumentation, and the melody is absolutely beautiful. Of course, Maaya Sakamoto's singing does it justice... The lyrics are also good.
Another top Kanno song is Tsuki no Mayu (Moon's Cocoon) from the Turn-A Gundam OST. That song is KAMI. Really. KAMI. With a capital K, A, M and I. And I don't mean paper. I actually heard it once when I was about 11 or so, and 5 years later when I hear it again I can actually remember the exact same sensation and I knew I had heard it before even though it was only once.
The tune is absolutely godlike. And the lyrics fit pretty well, too. The right kind of syllables... I like it a little better than Moon (the same song except in made-up language and sung by Gabriela Robin), the powerful singing of Aki Okui works better, IMO. It's more dramatic.
Needless to say, of course, Voices is also one of my top favourite songs. I happen to liek Akino Arai very much too (It helps that she works with one of Kanno's old friends Hogari Hisaaki, whom she did the Aquarion OST with, and who also did the very excellent Kokoro Library OST on his own. Kanno's composed some other songs for Arai before too, there's the excellent Kotori no Su and one other one on that same album - was it Reincarnation or Yousei no Shi?
Oh, and I like Max Bomber Girl too, for some strange reason.
23ji no ongaku is also a great soundtrack.
