Why is 80s music hated so much? Especially now, with hip-hop, "indie", and "emo" type stuff being so big, how can people say synth is bad?
Because the 80's are so old. 80's were about being new and hip, that is why the synth was popular because it was a non-traditional instrument. But when 80's music got old, the same fans threw it away because it was old and not hip.
That is my take on it, it could be it just sucked but they had nothing better to listen to.
I love the 80s.
I think the '80's is considered poor because of the wealth of generic, powder-puff style New Romantics and synth laden, hollow singles.
However, I adore the '80's because a lot of my favourite bands are from that era a la The SMiths (IMO the greatest band ever) and The Cure.
people don't hate the 80s, people just hate synth - in fact there is A LOT of 80s music that even today nobody critiques, like for example Talking Heads, Smiths, Billy Joel, Devo, Siouxie & the Banshees, Public Image Limited but I could go on for days..
i was under the impression that the 80s had "come back" already, just like the 60s and 70s before them. People are listening to music influenced heavily by the 80s, and some are wearing clothing styles from the time period. I'm waiting for the early 90s to come back. I want to wear parachute pants and a flannel shirt whilst listening to mc hammer and nirvana.

Robert Palmer!!! Granted, his stuff was too fucking commercial in the 1980s, but 1970-something to 1981 he was really at his best.

They probably mean the songs are seen as the kind played at "discotechques" rather than "nightclubs"
I think the main thing about the music is that the synths sound so primitive compared to modern synths - so even though they do some pretty damn creative stuff that's used in modern dance music all the time, people don't want to listen to 80s because it sounds so... "under-produced" (Only word I could think of to describe it)
The decade was the golden age of hardcore punk. Thrash metal came out of the 1980s, too. And yes, EDM started getting much better in that period.
Most of the complaining that people do about "80s music" is about the mainstream crap from that period. But mainstream music from just about any point in the 20th century sucks.
