Funny this post is made, because I just started to listen to chiptunes last night. I like Goto80 a lot, so I'll check out this stuff too.

I've only realy listened to gameboy stuff, but pretty much anything with a sound chip can be used.

Man, I was just about to say Goto80 myself! Best chiptune artist ever, IMHO. Llamawarning is an epic track.
Also, almost anything that comes out of 8bitpeoples is good, if you ask me.
Look up for Micromusic.
Oh, and YMCK is fun, too. Chiptune with neat lyrics.

As a person who uploaded some of that crap, I echo your warning! You can't really rely on reviews though -- a lot of Modarchive reviewers are just crazy idiots who don't like music. There's lots of great stuff on there with a bad review.
at 8bitpeoples, make sure you download the Anamanaguchi album
