Maybe I'm an elitist prick or something, but I love it when I find some music labeled as IDM. It's like, thank you for the warning, so I can avoid wasting my time. Thanks for informing me that there's nothing new here.
I mean, it's not necessarily that IDM is bad. But there's so much of it out there that in order to still be interesting, music has to be something else too. So if all you can say about it is that it's IDM, it's probably boring. I think.
What do you think, 4-ch? Is this genre label turning pejorative in general, or is it just me? (It could well just be me.)
The problem with IDM, for me, is that you feel you have to properly listen to it to try and spot whats so "intelligent" about it. With any other kind of music I can choose to sit there and analyse it or I can choose to sit there and have it on in the background. Also, just the name IDM sounds so pretentious to me ears. Normal dance music, trance etc, can be pleasingly complex and stir emotions within me so why do I need something supposedly intellectual when all it does is make me think "I don't get it".
The term was never serious. So don't take it that way.
Also, even though it's "dance music", it's nothing like trance, techno, or other garbage.
Trance and techno are "garbage"? Now I think you're elitist. (Well, that or you have no idea what good techno is)
there's different kinds of idm

I think I like the chill kind better :P Autechre just seems so random to me, but Lackluster actually has nice melodies going on and a groovy rhythm. Being labeled as the same thing doesn't really work for either of them.
