i'm not a fan of music in general but i want to start listening to music. but when i turn on the radio, i get annoyed by rap, rock, r&b, etc etc etc or anything that is just loud and annoying. what should i listen to?!?! (btw classical doesn't work for me either)...u can also list specific songs. :D
Belle & Sebastian.
Blues and jazz; beautiful and, to me, the highest form of expression in music.
Some examples of musicians:
B.B. King
Stevie Ray Vaughan
John Lee Hooker
Glenn Miller Orchestra
Ella Fitzgerald
George Shearing
You're looking for Experimental/Ritual music (sometimes falls under the category of 1970's progressive rock, or electronic/electronica depending on who you're looking up and the country they're from).
Look up Zero Kama and Korpses Katatonik. Perfect example.
Jpop, game music.
Try Merzbow
Post-Rock like Explosions in the sky or This will destroy you might do it for you.
Also New Age like Kitaro.
>3 - that's a good list you've got going there! ^∆^
Tracy Chapman, Beth Orton and Natalie Merchant are good.
Nick Cave
There was a good instrumental done by Johnny A. called "Oh Yeah".
Anything by Yawning Man
Om Mani Padme Hum: The Meaning of the Mantra in Tibetan Buddhism
that stuffs....

free ambient drone music
I recommend "artroom" "memories ep" and "sleepy eyes"
Give IDM a go. I recommend Chris Clark's "Body Riddle". Maybe throw in some FLEET, Sigur Ros, and Mew under the softer rock category.
i listen to some danzig
some new stuff cause its slow
not danzig 1 through 4 but after that
Jazz. Covers various genres and works in pretty much any situation.
I listen to one album from a dude when I'm going to sleep, and another of his albums for helping me stay up.
Some of Skinny Puppy's songs (like Church for example) qualify as 'not loud', and are quite listenable at that.
Nine Inch Nails' "Still" album (And all that could have been disc 2). Quasi-acoustic, and quite depressing. But good and "not loud".
ska? some bands: streetlight manifesto, reel big fish, big d and the kids table, ect
songs.... ummm start with trendy by reel big fish, da bomb by suburban lengends, good times by catch 22, the kids don't like it by reel big fish, S.R. by reel big fish ... and move out from there
Uh...I believe that type of ska would be listed under "loud" music.
Ulver - "Lykanthropen Themes" & "Teachings in Silence"
Try some spanish hard dance, aka 'cantadas' or 'poky music'
It's different to any kind of music, is a unique experience.
I also reccomend you some minimal house music, as well as spanish progressive
look for artists like 'christian millan', 'siliccom', 'oscar akagy', 'pastis & buenri'
you'll be surprised with the power of spanish dance music ;)
