Before a fangirl caves my skull in, I really liked Wicked.
But why is it so resoundingly popular? Certainly there are other powerful, thematic musicals, songs, and plays (Man of La Mancha, Westside Story, or even Knights of Cydonia and Nirvana, et cetera).
So why is Wicked a musical firestarter nearly akin to Star Wars?
The fuck is Wicked?
ya ive never heard of wicked
Because it's Idina Menzel and Kristin Chenoweth.
I'm not a crazed fangirl, but I'm a fan, so I guess I can speak for some.
In case you didn't know, adolescent girls worship them as theater goddesses, Menzel cause of her belting ability, her starring role in Rent, etc., Chenoweth for her belting and her coloratura soprano range and flexibility and her charisma, etc.
Although I hate to make this comparison, it's like Miley, Demi, and Selena for adolescent theater fangirls. It's not the best thing in the world, but it has appealing factors.
And I just realized how repetitive I'm being <_<
It's kind of surprising that a guy likes Wicked though. You're the first person I know, OP :).
That doesn't answer, what the fuck is Wicked? Sounds like a Black Metal band to me.

I personlly haven't seen it, but friends of mine say its awesome. I haven't even seen the Wizard of Oz though, so I doubt it would mean anything to me.

if you're dying to know so much, why couldn't you just put it into Wiki or Google yourself. I'm sure 5 seconds of Internet surfing won't kill you.

Maybe I should have put up a sarcasm warning about my question. Of course I would've googled it if I cared that much.
Also "musical" is an adjective that means "referring to music". And this is also its primary meaning in many languages, where "musical" on its own doesn't mean a thing. Although I know Westside Story (the musical), I must confess I don't know the others. Nirvana could have been a famous band name though.
Actually, my post should be read as "Wait, you're saying it is a very known thing, but I never heard about it. I'll pretend it's a Black Metal band to add emphasis on how I do NOT know it. So, where's the buzz?"
That said I think this is drifting a bit far from topic, and I don't think any of us would want the thread turning into a flamewar, now would we?
The last good musical I saw was Dr Horrible's Sing-along Blog.
Some Guy here: Well, I had only vaguely heard of the books and musical, but since I had some extra cash with me once in HMV, and the soundtrack was so cheap, I figured - why not? I like musicals.
I listened to the whole thing one night, and was really impressed. My Fiance immediately dove into it as well.
I think the reason the musical is so popular is for a few reasons. One, the songs are really easy to sing along to, and are usually quite funny (unlike that phantom of the opera reading letter scene where every freaking character is singing a different part over top each other.) The other reason is because a lot of the songs deal with issues like good and evil blah blah which a lot of younger people are still trying to deal with. Finally, the musical score is chuck full of powerful, rising notes that end in triumphant chords, which are always so damn fun to listen to.
Well, that's what I think, anyway, I could be wrong.
