... have you tried the search function of whatever IM program you have to look for people from Japan? I know ICQ does it, and Im sure all of the others do it too. Slightly related, where is the regular apostrophe when using the Windows Japanese keyboard drivers and IME and setting it to be the default language? I didnt want to change it, but I had to for this game I play.

Im an army brat i was based in yokota for a good ammount of time (10yrs) and i think its just like here there are a wide number of messaging options including sms messaging it depends on the person

almost no japanese uses sms... also most of them don't even know about it(also all cellphone support it as "cell mail/message"). they just write by their cellphone mailadress.
