A word of warning for all those reading this story on the computer...
A new research has found that watching a computer screen for nine or more hours a day may be linked to the development of a progressive eye disease, which, according to a report published in the British Medical Journal, eventually could lead to blindness.
Researchers at the Toho University School of Medicine in Tokyo, found the risk of heavy computer use and glaucoma was particularly strong among those who were short-sighted.
Glaucoma is more common in the elderly, and is characterized by progressive sight defects or visual field abnormalities that develop slowly over time. The exact causes are unknown, but potential risk factors include smoking and high blood pressure.
A link between glaucoma and short sightedness had already been established, but the added ingredient of heavy computer use -- while long debated as a possible risk factor for short sight -- has not been studied as a link to glaucoma, until now.
'This is the first evidence of a link between computers and glaucoma,' David Wright, the chief executive of the International Glaucoma Association in Britain, commented on the study.
'...the widespread use of computers is at unprecedented levels and it is reasonable to expect some effect on the visual system.'
Wright emphasized that anyone involved in heavy computer use should receive regular comprehensive eye examinations to help detect early possible signs of glaucoma.
The researchers concluded that, 'Computer stress is reaching higher levels than have ever been experienced before. In the next decade, therefore, it might be important for public health professionals to show more concern about myopia and visual field abnormalities in heavy computers users.'

'...the widespread use of computers is at unprecedented levels and it is reasonable to expect some effect on the visual system.' - what kind of scientific research is this.
I have to agree with >>2
This article lacks a lot of information regarding these "tests", I'd like to see exactly how they got these conclusions. Why? I have little eyesight.
note that its been LINKED to glaucoma, but more importantly the news is very widespread: http://www.google.ca/search?hl=en&q=Heavy+computer+use+may+cause+blindness&meta= (there has also been tv specials about this case on japanese tv). So for those who really care about their eyesight they can further research about the case and see for themselves if its totally legit or not.
