"Ratzinger's past includes brief membership of the Hitler Youth movement and wartime service with a German army anti- aircraft unit. (...) Ratzinger was enrolled in an anti-aircraft unit that protected a BMW factory making aircraft engines. The workforce included slaves from Dachau concentration camp. Ratzinger has insisted he never took part in combat or fired a shot — adding that his gun was not even loaded — because of a badly infected finger. He was sent to Hungary, where he set up tank traps and saw Jews being herded to death camps.

Greater roles for women, a more welcoming posture toward gays and lesbians, and a moderation of views on sexuality, genetic research, euthanasia or contraception to prevent AIDS -- none of these is likely to gain ground under Benedict. As a Vatican official, he also opposed Turkey's entry into the European Union, forbade German Catholics from sharing communion with Lutherans at a joint gathering in 2003, and failed to hasten the prosecution of American priests involved in child abuse.

Lol. I misread "forbade German Catholics from sharing communion with Lutherans" and saw "Lithuanians" there. Poor Lithuanians, the armpit of the Baltic...

Something that bothered me was how everyone said he was the main candidate for pope going in, it didn't take long for him to be elected, and now there are articles about how he had been working for months now to line up support to get elected, but he said he "prayed not to be elected Pope but He didn't listen to me!". I think it says a lot about this person.

How about we wait to see what he does as Pope before judging whether his appointment was a bad idea?

As for reforms, it's worth pointing out that the Church is two millenia old. Of course it's conservative! While some reform may be needed, too much could lead to neo-Moonies in a few centuries time.

I hope he dies soon, as may any other new pope. Curse them all!
