"A handful of Sri Lankan women have decided it's time to learn to swim. "Many more women and children would have been saved (from the tsunami) if they knew how to swim," says Girlie Ganage, age 44. Twenty-five gutsy gals are taking lessons from a British swimming teacher who hopes to help change cultural attitudes that have made swimming taboo for women. "Before the tsunami, it would have been unthinkable. Men still don't believe me when I tell them," says Ganage. Thanks to nonprofit group Swim Lanka, children are also diving in."
