Topping more than 30,000 a year for all of this century, Japan’s suicide rate is now the second highest in the world, trailing only Sri Lanka.
With over 100 Japanese a day taking their own lives, the Ministry of Health, Labor and Welfare is doing its utmost to keep people alive, conducting a series of projects aimed at getting the number of suicides below 22,000 within five years.
Nowhere is the suicide dilemma as obvious in Japan as in the Tohoku Region’s Akita Prefecture, which has the dubious honor of having been home to the greatest number of suicide victims in the country every year for the past decade…

Intense social pressure, I think, is to blame. When society expects you to be nothing but a success, the pressure on the individual must be terribly high. When something goes wrong, many of them think it's the end.

Suicide Deaths A Growing Trend In Japan
"Police in Japan say nine people in two groups have been found asphyxiated in sealed cars, in the latest cases of group suicides that have surged in Japan recently.
Authorities say six bodies - five men and one woman in their 20s - were discovered in a car in Chichibu, about 50-miles northwest of Tokyo.
Officials say three charcoal burners were still smoking in the car when the bodies were found, and the windows had been sealed with tape. Authorities thought the six met over the Internet before dying together in a wooded area."

The doctorine of Zen in Japan is that you must do everything you should do, maybe including a suicide. Then you may find an universal truth from your experiences. Moreover, this Zen doctorine has contributed to technological developments in Japan.
Since Bushido was made from the neo-confucianism with many modifications and also Nazi-Shintoism was influenced by neo-confucianism, what US destoried was this neo-confucianism in Japan. Neo-confucianism from China was newer religion in Japan. Thus, you can say that the Japan just back to previous religional situation.
