"the U.S. Treasury Secretary, has asked Congress to raise the government’s credit limit and avoid having some of its operations shut down.
The government’s total debt is now near its limit of $8.2 trillion and the government needs Congressional authority to continue borrowing money.
If Congress does not approve, it will be very difficult to pay off debts or borrow money. It is expected, however, that Congress will agree to the extension.
This will be the fourth time the Bush administration asks Congress to raise the debt limit, as it has already created a series of massive deficits, brought on by tax cuts, the September 11 attacks and wars and rebuilding in Afghanistan and Iraq."
