THE ASAHI SHIMBUN
Sharp Corp. said Tuesday it has filed a suit against South Korean rival Samsung Electronics Co., claiming its products are infringing on patents of liquid crystal display technologies.
Sharp asked the U.S. federal district court in Texas to suspend sales in the United States of Samsung's TVs, cellphones and other products that use LCD panels. It also demanded an undisclosed sum in damages.
Sharp said it filed the suit against Samsung and two sales companies because its negotiations with Samsung for settlement failed. The suit involves five patents on technologies that improve the LCD panels' display functions.
Samsung led the LCD TV market in the United States in the January-March quarter with a 13.7-percent share in terms of shipment value. It was followed by Sony Corp., with 12.3 percent, and Sharp, with 12.1 percent.(IHT/Asahi: August 8,2007)
