The mother of a neo-Nazi skinhead shot three times says he is a "lethal weapon" with nothing to lose and she lives in fear of what he will do.

Sandra Hindrup, of Wanganui, says her son William Mosen has always been a ratbag - trying when he was two to flush his newborn brother headfirst down the toilet and stealing from collection boxes at 10 - but is now "scaring her to pieces".

On June 10, Mr Mosen, 26, a self-proclaimed Nazi skinhead with tattoos covering his body, including the words Nazi and Sieg Heil etched on his face, was shot in Cornfoot St, Castlecliff.

He was taken to Wanganui Hospital with three gunshot wounds. Despite his injuries he was caught having sex in the hospital chapel and then discharged himself.

He went home to his mother's house and last Friday walked her down the aisle at her wedding. But now she wants nothing more to do with the oldest of her six children.

Mrs Hindrup said that on Wednesday he "flipped, lost the plot" kicking in her car and then yesterday tried to break into her house.

He had been taking drugs and had his own bullet-proof vest and knives, she said.

"He's walking the streets, he's armed and dangerous. There's nothing left for him, he had a good chance this time and he had everything given to him. He's history. He is, he's had it."

She and husband Sam had supported Mr Mosen, who has more than 60 convictions, but now she feared her son would kill the person who shot him and then spend the rest of his life in jail, or he would be "taken out and put out of his misery".

Detective Sergeant Neil Forlong said police had reconstructed the scene and were following leads and trying to find people needed to speak to in relation to the shooting at Castlecliff.

"It's still difficult because we are not getting a lot of cooperation from him. He's not being impolite, he's just not telling us what happened."

Mr Forlong said if Mr Mosen's mother had concerns he was breaking the law, she should contact police. "If we knew he was breaking the law, we would arrest him. But this is not about him, the inquiry is about trying to locate the person who shot him."
