I searched for info about it on the net, and found the niconico douga's press release.
Acording to that, as of March 20th 2008, subscribers of niconico douga has reached 6 million people.
If you can read Japanese, check here.
http://blog.nicovideo.jp/niconews/2008/03/001026.html
Niconico's users are limited almost to Japanese people so it's natural that users of niconico are far less than youtube users. Niconico is based on Japanese language only while youtube is based on English, which is the language whose speakers are a lot more than Japanese speakers and youyube is doing localization which means if you access youtube from Japan, the pages of youtube are shown basically in Japanese. If you access it from China, then pages are shown in Chinese.
Even if you live in US, if you change settings then pages of youtube can be seen in your preferable language, say, Italian or whatever.
>>314
I saw that you reposted >>310 to "Chat in English" - thank you!
It seems that posting from university does not work, and I'm not having much luck with proxies either. Most 2ch viewers won't work, since I don't run Windows. (I'm not sure how that would help anyway.)
There are a couple of other things to try, but it doesn't seem very promising. Ah well. Maybe the block will be lifted...
Another English poster here and I'm getting the same error. It seems like a recent thing as I was able to post just a few days ago.
>>316
Ah, you saw my post there!
>>316-317
I don't know why 2ch block users from overseas. Maybe 2ch's servers can't handle traffic from overseas anymore? Or some people from overseas cyber attack 2ch so access from overseas started to be banned?
One American 2ch user in youtube board of 2ch all of a sudden
was denied access to 2ch a few days ago. Below is a post by a Japanese giving him advice in which he tells him three ways to be able to access 2ch again, The post is the same as >>97 of
http://academy6.2ch.net/test/read.cgi/english/1207506976/
I tried translate it in English.
-------------------
There are only three ways. C
Change your ISP or buy a 2ch viewer, or look for proxy thatis not banned by 2ch.
http://2ch.tora3.net/
The URL above is not "2ch.net" but it is 2ch's official website and not suspicious. The website says "2ch viewer" but in this case it doesn't mean 2ch exclusive use browser but it's more like a "Right to use 2ch." Even if you buy this right, you can't access to 2ch with IE or Firefix so the "right" comes with 2ch exclusive use browser.
・N.T.Technology
This is a company that manage 2ch's servers.
Most of 2ch's servers are in USA.
This company also manages 2ch's viewer(=●)
Jim from N.T.Technology PIE

http://jp.youtube.com/watch?v=JitcAwajlNA
----------------------------------------------
I don't think you'll bother change your ISP just to post in 2ch. Plus, there's no guarantee that 2ch'll accept access from your new ISP. ● costs 350yen(3.5USD) a month or if you pay yearly fee in sigle payment then US$33.00.
Looking for proxies seems the best idea. I don't know much about proxy things but I heard some proxies are already banned by 2ch. So it may not be easy to find a effective proxy.
Or as you say, just wait until 2ch lift blocks.
Anyway, I hope you guys can post in 2ch again soon!
>>315
That's not quite what I meant--I was not asking about the number of people who visit niconico douga, but the type of people.
For example, perhaps I am incorrect, but: from the comments, those on niconico douga seem much more pleasant than those on youtube.
Then again, I could be incorrect--perhaps it only seems that way because I visit youtube more often, and thus have seen more impolite comments.
I just posted to 2ch a minute ago with no problems. I'm in the US, by the way.
Maybe it's just certain boards where you can't post, or it may be a temporary thing.
>>319
Now I understand what you meant.
Well, niconico douga's videos have their shares of abusive comments, too. (alothough, that depends on videos you watch, I guess.) Actually, I was surprised to read that you think niconico video has better comments from users than youtube.
I don't watch youtube videos posted by people other than Japanese people often so maybe I don't know much about comments
posted on videos by American or British or whatever. But as far as comments on videos posted by Japanese people, they are less abusive than those of niconico's. That's my impression. It's fuynny that you and I have exact opposit impression on these two
movie websites.
This may not be off the track of your question but I'm under the impression that niconico has more dense population of Japanese Otaku people and more anime related videos. This my be because niconico's people tend to double as 2channelers.
But as the statistics show that nicinico's subscribers has reached 6 million, people other than otaku actually has subscribed to it, it seems. In case of 2channel, too, it's otaku population was dense at the early stage of the forum but now general people (people other than otaku) use it, too.
But Both 2channel and niconico still have big influence of otaku people intact in my opinion.
>>317
Where are you (posting) from? You said "English poster", but I guess you mean the English board. Come to think about it, I haven't seen イギリス人さん posting in a while either.
>>318
Thank you for the tips. I believe a proxy would be best, but it seems that all proxys I can find are blocked. (Or they just don't work.) I'll try posting from an ISP in the .com or .net domains next.
>>320
Yeah, I can see US posters all the time. The problem is that as far as I can tell, my entire country is blocked - and this is on the "English" board, which is about the only place I really can post, given that I'm really just at beginner level Japanese.
When I went to Italy I could post to 2ch,No prob.
Many Japanese living in Europe and USA or another country,
always post 2ch.
:) i need some sleep
I'm posting from the United States in the English board. Well I guess trying to post would be a better way of saying it.
288 here,
Things didn't turnout so well. I don't think i can actually care/love for a girl because i get too jealous and i need attention a lot. I'm a HUGE stalker as well. :(
Meh, she was boring anyway.
>>327
Do you find yourself becoming less and less socialized during your reclusive time?
I mean, if you don't talk much, your communication skills worse and worse from my experience and think like celf-centered.
Going out with a girl vertually on the net or not help you have
socializing experiencess, so I would say you should take advantages of that kind of occasions.
Sorry if I sound judgemental but, before you say going out with a girl is not your cup of tea, you should try it. Just live and learn while you are still young.

I see people are talking about the blocking issue right now.
Chat in English (英語で雑談) Part 112
Is anyone else here in Sweden, and have you been able to post there lately? It would be nice to know if it's the whole .se top domain that is blocked, or not. (So far I've tried three different ISPs, and my university, with no luck.)
>>314 Still here? Say hello from me.
Jenny is the coolest poster :D
HELLO JAPANESE
I AM HAPPY YANKEE
YOU ARE A LIAR!
>>330
Yeah, I'm here. I'll copy and pate your post there.
Hmmm... You tried more than 3 ISPs and sitll no luck...
Maybe 2ch seems to be having a tough approach to posters from overseas...
Some days ago, 2ch was threatned by DDOS attacks from Korean ISPs and didn't function. The attack seemed to be done aiming at the busiest time for 2ch, which is at night. I heard that it took a few hours for 2ch to get on the normal track.
I heard 2ch had similar collective attacks from China, too.
Sweden has nothing to do with those attacks so I don't understand why accesses from Sweden or maybe from other countries are blocked.
I hope you'll be able to post as before as soon as possible.
>>330
I'm still able to post fine, just haven't been so active
lately due to work. We had a discussion about why it may not
be letting some foreigners post, but apparently no specific
countries are blocked. One guy was saying that 2ch just didn't
like open proxies, and that some ISPs have a problem because
of them, but I still don't see how that really has anything to
do with it.
Some people have been saying that 2ch reader apps can sometimes
get around these blocks, so have you tried any of those? I don't
really see how that would work either, but I guess it's worth a try.
http://janestyle.s11.xrea.com/
The error I'm getting is 「海外ドメイン規制(se)。」. To me that looks like a block on the whole country. (But I'm just at beginner level, so...)
>>334
I'll be back, but it might take some time.
>>335
Yes - I was fearing the worst for a while, but it's nice to see that you can still post.
Didn't you need a US$ 30/year subscription too, to get around domain blocks? That's what I thought from the discussion, and some Googling. Besides, I need to find a reader that works for Unix, I don't even have Windows at home.
>>336
I use this on Linux: http://jd4linux.sourceforge.jp/
I have no idea how any reader would help you with blocks though.
>>336
Argh... it does sound like a countrywide block. Though I'm
wondering if it's just that your hostname ends in .se, rather
than .net, .com, etc. Perhaps your ISP changed the hostname
format, which might be why it came into effect out of the
blue.
As for the 2ch 'Gold Account', that's right, it's about $30
(from http://2ch.tora3.net/) and seems to be a sort of
white-listing service. As for readers, so far I've only found
a Windows one (Jane Style) and a Mac/OS one (Thousand), but
will have a search and try to find a Unix-compatible one.
>>337
I only have a vague idea, but I think you need a reader to use the subscription service. Or something.
>>338
It is most likely the fact that I have .se hostname, yes... And as far as I can tell, it hasn't changed.
The good news is that I have to change ISPs soon anyway, so it's only a matter of finding one that uses a .net or .com domain for its customers instead. Hopefully. Paying for 2ch seems a little weird for someone like me who can't really post anything intelligent in 99% of all threads. (Yet.)
I'm posting from .sg and every single time, no matter what board, I always get this message
書きこみが終わりました。
画面を切り替えるまでしばらくお待ち下さい。
and it never changes. And the post is never made.I simply have no way of getting around this, I tried using 2ch browsers but it didn't help either. Wargh!
Here, have a double chocolate chip cookie I got from Subway's... つ●
ムシャムシャ
(`・ω・´)
(ノ●\)
>>340
Have you ever tried and click your browser's "back" botton
to get back to the thread after the message are shown?
After getting back to the thread in which you're posting your comment, click "reload" botton, then, you can check your comment
is posted or not.
I haven't used 2ch browsers and I am Japanese posting from Japan
so what I worte above mey not help you, though.
Of course I did that, I'd refresh the thread to see if my post appeared... 100% of the time, it doesn't appear. No matter how many times I repost. It's like the "書き込みが終わりました" is a lie!
I wonder if it's to do with the way the ISPs configure internet connections here, they put large groups of users under one big proxy server (I'm bad at understanding how internet connections work but it's like how a huge amount of people end up having the same address)
Glad you enjoyed the cookie, I liked it too. I treated myself to a small bag of handmade Famous Amos cookies, but I finished eating it (´・ω・`)
Bored, bored, bored.
>>342
It sounds like a trick to confuse spambots.
Do you get the same thing if you try to post from somewhere else? (work/school, friend)
Yeah :( I've tried internet cafes, schools, friends' houses... same error.
I managed to post there ONCE using a Canadian proxy they hadn't picked up on yet. Next time I tried they detected it.
Wait....so 2ch blocks all foreign IPs? I just went into 2ch and saw a bunch of threads on some board.
>>346
As far as I know, even if your IP is blocked, you can see threads but you can't post if your IP is blocked.
I don't think all foreign IPs are blocked. Some people from overseas can post.
hey wassup,bullshit vanila ice!
I'm Fuckin' monkey!
nice to meet u!
Yeah, thank god they don't block IPs from viewing threads. I'd be at a bit of a loss if they didn't, thanks to so much discussion being centered in 2ch...
I wonder if there will ever be a day when 2ch really dies and fragments the Japanese online community into little pieces...
Even if 2ch died, chances are there'd be another similar forum would show up.
Basically 2ch is a website owned by one individual so if he gets
bored, then he might sell the right of running 2ch to anyone
who are interested. The amount of money would be huge.

Pretty awful article in that link.
But is there anyone who can say something more to that? Like "Yes it is all truth." or "No it's absolutely wrong because ..."
beautifully written, but somewhat misinformed on various aspects of culture
But I cannot say I wholly disagree with it.
Lessee if I can post here...
I can. But still can't post anywhere else on 2ch... damn.
>>362
Are you スウェーデン人?
Anyway seems like some people who access to 2ch from overseas
are having trouble. 2ch denies access from some ISP of overseas
as far as I know.
Good luck.

No, 361-362 is someone else (with the same problem).
>>362
I can't post on the English board, but some other boards apparently work fine. Unfortunately my Japanese is pitiful, so I still can't contribute anything -- or even understand much.
I'll try and work up the courage to post in a "Chat in Japanese" thread I saw recently...

>>364
Banning accesses from overseas is rediculous.
I know cyber attacks from China, Korea and maybe other countries happen sometime, though....
English board especially shouldn't ban accesses from overseas. It has to be a place where people from various countires mingle and have fun.
Good luck to スウェーデン人, too.

I think for me it just has to do with the way the internet is set up. There's some kind of proxy thing by default... I guess 2ch doesn't welcome it like that.
The only other way is to buy moritapo or whatever it's called to have proper posting access. No way I'm paying $ to post on 2ch or look at old topics though.

Wow, that is a 神ID indeed.
I wanted to improve my English better so downloaded Skype lately.
But those who tried to contact me were only Chinese people,who wanted to study Japanese.
I was a bit surprised at the fact that Japanese language was popular with them.
Because I've thought that Chinese people, in general, hate Japan because of the government's anti-Japanese education.
So I was very glad to know that there were some of them who were interested in Japan or Japanese things.
I hope China and Japan build a good relationship with each other in the future.
age
I wonder about the chinese thing as well.
I was in Japan last year on an one year exchange program.
At my school and where I lived there were many students from China.
The majority I have met and talked to hated Japan. And comaplained alot about Japan. Some have been in Japan for quite a few years now.
Which makes me wonder WHY ARE THEY EVEN STAYING IN JAPAN?? Why don't they just leave if they hate it so much? It's not like the Japanese governement haved locked the gates preventing them from leaving right?
>>Which makes me wonder WHY ARE THEY EVEN STAYING IN JAPAN??
Same sentiment here. Fine if you want to go hating on Japan, they hate on lots of other folks too anyway, but FFS get out of Japan if you hate it so much.
I can kind of understand why even otherwise nice balanced Japanese people can have this irrational (albeit stereotyped) hatred towards Chinese/Korean/etc immigrants when they like to piss on the country nobody asked them to come into. (as opposed to maybe expat workers who are there because their company insisted they be there)
I find that the majority of Chinese people who learn Japanese are not from mainland China, but from Taiwan. In fact, most Taiwanese celebrities know quite a lot of Japanese...
I heard Taiwan is generally described as 親日 (pro-Japan, friendly with Japan) Is this true?
>>392
They were students, right? Of course it's not like the Japanese government locking them up or anything, but it's probably not complete free will of Chinese students either, considering how oppressive it gets once they in the "system" in Chinese society. If it's an exchange program, the length is set from the beginning, so they can't just quit staying in Japan. Of course, even so, it wouldn't be logical to constantly bitch about Japan.
>this irrational (albeit stereotyped) hatred towards Chinese/Korean/etc immigrants
This is largely due to so-called "zainichi" issues. There probably isn't well-balanced explanation written in English of what the issues really are. If you don't even know what "zainichi" refer to, it's not a good idea to use judgmental words such as "irrational".
>>394
No. How many people do you think live in China?
>>395
Well, Taiwanees people probably don't like to be simply grouped as such. There have been always pro-China people in Taiwan. This is hardly surprising considering how it came to be. Let's just say Taiwan is still trying to establish its national identity. Issues such as which language (Chinese, but their dialects are really mutually unintelligible languages) should be promoted publically are still hotly debated.
Yes, I know about the zainichi issues, but I still find the reaction that some have to ANYTHING China/Korea related to be rather off-putting. Maybe "irrational" is the wrong word, but I really must roll my eyes at people who actually start forming a clearly negative opinion of people (who make no nationalistic claims or anything of the sort) simply because they find out they've got Chinese/Korean origins... and claim it's a justified cultural thing. I think it's as bad as the rednecks in America who get pee'd off at a president having zomgomg some shred of Muslim connection.
I guess I still feel irked by those used to homogenous environments who understandably get extra-sensitive to issues relating to foreigners... being so used to dealing with foreigners of all types, most types of nationalism and resultant attitudes (of all countries - C,J,K,whatever) just seem hollow to me.
Well some of the "haters" I met, went to Language school in Japan, than shingaku into the universities. (And thus, it would have taken many years) So they weren't on exchange. Like I left in a year cause I had to.
I mean there were some Chinese (from China) who loved Japan, there were just still a bigger majority that didn't. (At least at the school I was, and where I lived)
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
As for Taiwan and it's more pro-Japanese things.
(Not trying to turn this into a history lesson)
Not everyone in Taiwan is pro-Japanese
Taiwan is mostly seperated between the "外省人" (external-province person) and "本省人" (inner-province person) + the aboriginals. The current governement ruling Taiwan is the KMT and are considered "outer".
Those considered "outer" were people who emigrated from mainland China near the end of the Chinese Civil War (along with Chiang Kai Shek). Their decendants are called this as well. "Inner" were those who were in Taiwan prior to the mass immigration.
The majority of the "external" population of Taiwan dislike the Japanese, where as the "inner" is more pro-japanese. The inner considered Japan as good people, because they helped with infrastructure etc. However, like many other Asian countries, the Taiwanese were forced to give up their Chinese names and made to to speak Japanese, and basically to throw out their chinese ancestory. So there were many people in Taiwan now who are sensitive to this issue.
When the KMT took over, they thought themselves as the "liberator" of the Taiwanese people. Some appreciated it, while others just hated this. They took land and money and basically bullied the "inner" Taiwanese. They also mass murdered many many Taiwanese.
If you talk to some older generations of Taiwanese people, some would say they prefer to be ruled by Japan than by China.
So these issues are always so hard... SIGH ><
>like many other Asian countries, the Taiwanese were forced to give up their Chinese names
C'mon, if you are knowledgeable enough to be able to spell 外省人 and 本省人, why do you believe such a bull on its face value? Forced? It was based on permission. Those who wanted Japanese style names had to meet requirements such as being fluent in Japanese.
>I think it's as bad as the rednecks in America who get pee'd off at a president having zomgomg some shred of Muslim connection.
No. Are those alleged highjackers really the perpetrators of 911? Don't you think it's amazing that Chosen Soren, who without a doubt was involved in Japanese abduction, still exists?
some 外省人 are fucked up losers and should go back to china rather trying to suck up chinese asses
