1st Gundam is the best of all series in Japan.
But why doesn't it have popularity in U.S?
There are many great serifs in 1st, but maybe I think translation is bad.
Very many anime quote serifs of 1st Gundam. It is Shakespeare of Japanese anime.

I've watched lots of anime that have made references to First Gundam. Unfortunately, when it was airing and still hot anime was not known very well in America. So it didn't carry over until much later, and by that time it was quite outdated, and most people weren't interested in trying it out unless A. they were a hardcore Gundam fan B. they had seen it somewhere else C. they knew First Gundam was extremely key and popular, and wanted to see what such a famous thing was like.

You're right. The original series (and maybe UC series in general) aren't that popular, I don't think. Not nearly as popular as they are in Japan, at least. It seems like the alternate universe series are a bit more popular, but even they don't appear to be as liked as other anime series, seeing how SEED got shuffled off to a 1:00 AM timeslot on television.
Still, the original series does have its major fans that care about it. A surprising amount of people are into Gundam models, too, I think.
I haven't compared the English version directly to the Japanese original, but I don't think the translation was bad at all. It seemed to be pretty well done. Certainly much better than other series where the people in charge seem to like making changes for no real reasons.
