I'd like to ask how popular the following artists are (in Japan), or how popular they were. Also, what kind of people listen to them?

Spitz
Shougo Hamada
can goo
Maaya Sakamoto
angela
Nana Kitade
Kyuu Sakamoto
Bonnie Pink
Akino Arai

Most of them have had their songs featured in an anime.

聞いたいです。以下のアーティストはどれくらい人気ですか?どれくらい人気*だった*? 聞き手はどんなひとですか?

スピッツ
浜田省吾
can goo
坂本真綾
angela
北出奈菜
坂本九
BONNIE PINK

loled.

why kyu sakamoto?
well. guess most japanese know few about him,
supposedly just "sukiyaki"(was that?) song and it's covered songs in eng.
personally I think the who translated its title at that time is
absolute lack of linguistic aethtetique.

original title of so called"sukiyaki" is
"ue wo muite arukou", means actually
"let's walk looking above"
or from its meaning can be translated
"let's have positive mental attitude" as well.

btw he is dead in 1985.

how did you know him?
this can be interresting question for me.

I knew him precisely because of Sukiyaki aka Ue wo muite arukou.

What I meant about this whole topic was... even among unpopular artists or popular artists, there's a certain type of people they appeal to, and I want to know what kind of people those artists appeal to, really.
I'll be sad if it's only anime otaku who listen to Akino Arai for example.

Even with Kyuu Sakamoto, I know he's famous and I know he died in that awful plain crash, but.. among who? Like, is he a hit with those arty type of people? Or was he more of an all-ages national celebrity who was considered part of the nation's culture? Or was he just a very successful and humble artiste? Did he appeal more to old people then? Or middle-aged people? Do his songs only appeal to old people now?

I don't even need proof really, I would just really really appreciate if someone could tell me what they know of any of the artists there. I mean, I can't say I know the same exactly for English artists, but I have an idea about some things... which you kind of get to know about artists from a certain genre or period in that culture. I try to apply that kind of intuition with Japanese music but I figure I'll be wrong since that country's kinda different anyway.

I'd also like to know what people thought of Yamashita Tatsurou.

Now, anyone here who's not fluent in english and read this whole post? (I really doubt it)
