I have a question.
Are the Japanese people really so polite? I often see in films - and to a lesser extent, anime - nothing but politeness. In contrast to where I live (North America) this is very astonishing. People here are usually very unfriendly and mean, especailly as strangers. Is this just Japanese media, or are people actually as friendly and polite as they appear?

A friend of mine who has studied in Japan told me a lot about this subject. Basically, Japanese have a strong sense of unity and teamwork. Complete strangers will be very polite and reserved around each other to avoid conflict and keep with the status quo. Japanese customer service is possibly the best in the world.
But, this is how they behave in public. With friends, (and especially with sake) they will be as rude and crude as any other people.
