Finding motivation (9)

Over time, I've slowly become something of a hikkikomori. However, I'm still young and have plenty of opportunity to turn my life around. The only problem is that I can't seem to find any motivation in doing so other than feeling less shameful and depressed. I can take care of those issues in the short term by focusing my mind solely on my hobbies (anime, etc.) so I don't feel the pressing need to change my situation. I do know that the longer I wait, the worse the situation will become. Yet whenever I consider or attempt to do something to turn my life around in the long run (such as going back to college), I feel paralyzed because I can't make myself _want_ to change things. The way that things are now, my living expenses are covered by my Dad, thus there isn't an urgent need to go out and find a job either.

In summary, what could I do to motivate myself to turn my life around?

You sound like me. I'm in university and just going along with the flow. I spend all my time on internets. In fact, I'm at uni and using the internet right now! LOL

I'm doing the right thing though. I'll get a good job and get lots of money and buy my way out of all problems. I has a plan!

Hmm.. well, have you ever asked yourself what you want in life, like what you want to do in the future?

There were several periods when I also began to enter the hikikomori phase but I know that my gung-ho mother won't accept that so to make it easier for me, I started to think of small goals I can achieve. Tomorrow, for example, I am hosting a Christmas party for my friends. I guess you could say I am living the day as it goes but at the least it is keeping me motivated. Besides these small "goals", I also set a long term goal. A "dream", you could say.

Different things will work for different people, but knowing what you want in life is a start. ;)

OP here. Well, I've discovered that, even after trying to get myself motivated and thinking about the future, the real trouble for me is that I get overwhelmed by anxiety whenever I try to change anything. If only I could deal with that then I'm sure I could actually do something with my life outside of my room. The only problem is I have no idea how to fix that. Any thoughts?

Have you thought about keeping a personal journal. Don't show it to anybody and write in it everyday, even just a little bit. Stay positive with it and talk about what you do and things that you like. Eventually you will learn what you want to do with your life and with direction you will find motivation.
