In a month from now I am going to be moving and the drive will be a long one.. here's the thing, I have never drove long distance before and i'm afraid of money issues and having accidents or some shit. Not only that but i'll be away from friends and family for a long time. How on earth do you prepare for something like this?
Get AAA. Have either credit worth at least $5000 or $5000 in an account tied to a debit card. That should take care of anything car-related happening along the way. If you're putting your luggage on top of your car, fasten it securely. If you're going the U-Haul route, get your trailer back to them on time; they're sticklers for deadlines. Make sure to stop every two hours and get out of the car just to walk around for a while. If you feel yourself falling asleep at the wheel, GET OUT OF THE CAR AND TAKE A SHORT WALK. Energy drinks or coffee are good to have with you. Also bring something to snack on. Be sure to stop for meals. Listen to upbeat music to keep yourself awake. If you'd rather listen to a book on tape, get something suspenseful or full of mystery or action. That'll also help keep you awake. Just make sure you're paying more attention to the road than your "keeping awake supplies". It'll be just fine. If you follow these rules, you can make driving long distances feel more like just driving a lot of short distances at the same time! I don't suggest trying to drive for more than 14 hours straight, though. If you have to do this, stop at a hotel and sleep before continuing.
