How do I tone down my muscles? aka make the muscles smaller and making the body more bony.

2 Name: Anonymous : 2007-10-20 06:03 ID:/lnbOKAO

Dont work out.

eat only what you need to.

This is something you should ask a nutrionist or your doctor, not to leave it up to anon.

Weight loss can be a seriously dangerous thing with ill effects that can last for years.

Eat low-protein high-carbohydrate diet and skip breakfast or make long periods of fasting like skipping dinner: this keeps insulin down and glucagon up which is the signal for the tissues in the body to consume protein.

Also if you want to reduce the size of the muscle but have it well defined it depends on the kind of exercise you perform.

Why do you want to be like that?

BTW, I'm not a doctor but a biochemist, >>4 is right, you are better off with a professional in the matter.

Okay, thanks for the current info.

THREAD RECYCLE, how do I shorten the width between my shoulders?

Put yourself in a trash compactor?

I don't think you can really do anything about that other than change your clothing style. :/

That nails it,... Changing your clothing style should correct whatever imperfections you worry about.

stop lifting weight and start workign on cardio. your muscle will tone down and you'll be riped after that. also if you choose to lift weight do less weight and more reps

Sorry, regarding the diet I got it all mixed up: you must keep proteins up and carbohydrates down.

Also >>13 is correct.

Cheers

I thought protein-shakes were for body building, not toning down..

It depends on a number of things: if you combine them with a high carbohydrate diet then they will be used for anabolic metabolism (building). But if you have a low carbohydrate diet then glucagon will "tell" the cells that they need to break down protein in order to keep the blood glucose level constant. So you need to keep consuming fatty acids and protein for glucose synthesis.

I don't really trust those protein-shakes so you're better off eating meat and fish.

So protein is a better source of energy than carbs? Otherwise you could have a low protein diet and high carb diet. I know how the glucose feedback stuff works, just perplexed to how proteins and carbs work with regard to toning down muscles. Muscles will give up glycogen and fat only when blood glucose levels are very low. But that's not very practical when you have to be starving in order to get your glucose levels that low.

protein is not a better source of energy, they are consumed as energy source only when they are required to synthesise glucose de novo. You avoid carbohydrates (glucose) in your diet to make the body behave as if it was starving so:

-No insulin --> no signal of abundance --> no storage of energy in lipid tissue
-Keep consuming protein as energy source, however they have less energy than carbohydrate because you'll spend some energy in turning them into glucose --> they get consumed faster.

what about shoulders?

You mean how to shrink them?

22 Name: Anonymous : 2007-10-22 14:29 ID:Heaven

Why in the world would you want to shrink them?
If anything, they should be one of your assets. Girls really dig them broad.

I meant better source of energy with regards to protein breaking down into glucose slower than carbs. Therefore less chance of them being converted into fat (perhaps?). Anyway, was kind of asking about the diet in relation to the actual breakdown of muscle rather than the lack of buildup of muscle.

Well it is the same thing, glucagon it's pretty much the opposite to insulin so it tells the body tissue to consume their own proteins.

Then they are broken down in smaller metabolites and transported to the liver for glucose neogenesis. So proteins:

Provide less energy than glucose
Consume energy at being used to synthesise new glucose

i suggest going to a nutritionist, but i pretty much sit at my computer all day and barely move, and i'm skinny as a rail. not sure if that's good or would work for you, but i love my figure, people say i look like a model and ask me how i do it. they never believe me when i say by sitting at a computer all day, but it's true!
