4 years of fail and shit (7)

i just took my placement test on japanese for my university a while ago. At first, I thought that I would place relatively high, considering i took Japanese in high schoolo for four fucking years. Apparently, I was wrong. I barely managed to place in Japanese II at my university. What the fuck, anonymous. I thought I would be able to skip AT LEAST 2 quarters of Japanese. This revelation of my actual language skills made me start to wonder what other shit I've been sucking at and did not realize. Am I just overreacting and it's normal for people who took a lanaguage class in high school to place low in college? My pride right now is pretty much in the shitter, and I would really appreciate some consolidation to whether this event is normal among people or I really am made of fail and shit.

It's normal; high school language classes are notoriously bad.
I've met people who've taken seven years of French through middle and High School and are incapable of speaking a sentence.

There are exceptions, but generally students progress much more in dedicated university classes where the students are actually expected to study extensively on their own and practice conversation.

thank you, kind anonymous. Your advice put new faith in my life. I just hope I can take the workload of Japanese, Chinese, and Korean now...

Good for you for taking three - I always wanted to learn some other East Asian languages but Japanese was hard enough :)

I'd be concerned that you may be taking on a bit too much; 3 languages?! OK yes there are links but it's still going to be a lot of work. Languages at higher levels are hard. Very hard. Can't you focus on Japanese for your first year and see how you feel after that in regard to taking on other languages?

well technically, the only real NEW language ill be experiencing will be Chinese, since I'm a heritage Korean learner, and have some experience in Japanese. Plus, it will look really nice on my resume
