I am thinking about travelling through Europe this summer, without really planning where I'm going: just getting a month Eurail card and going where ever I fancy. Has anyone ever done this before, and is there advice I should heed when doing this kind of thing?

(from my experience in france at least, dont take that as perfect, or take it with a grain of salt, or whatever the expression is)
I think you got "special" treatment since you're american
i've been in quite a few hotels in western and central europe and the only one that wasn't up to north american standards was the one in switzerland (reddish stains on the walls...blood perhaps? i dont wanna know)

A travelers friend for cheap places to stay
(by the way with hotels i was only speaking of low-star hotels; im sure a high-star european hotel would be great, but with the lower end ones the european ones were slightly shoddier than the american counterparts which i felt didnt descend past a certain level since they were standard, were standardly clean, standardly maintained)
not that the european ones were BAD or even unliveable, i wasnt talking about blood stains level, i just preferred the american somewhat, i thought it was better maintained
bleh, maybe just forget what i said, you probably just want the cheapest possible place to stay for the night anyways if youre drifting through
