I'd say to explain it to them as tactfully as you can, and compromise on how to deal with the dog. An autopsy is fine, unless it costs a lot of money (and you said you already knew he was sick, so it's a bit...) and a funeral should be held. At the same time, you don't ned to force yourself to cry or anything.
