I want to know a group of people unrelated to these I already know. What can I do? If it was summer I would go on a biking camp/trip, but it's too cold and my other hobby -- swimming -- is not very social. I'm a programmer by day which kinda sucks.
Try joining some kind of volunteer group. I'm going to Habitat for Humanity next week partly to meet new people, because I don't have friends, and partly because I'm a worthless piece of shit and I feel I should contribute something to society.
So, you know, meet other people like that.
I agree with what >>2 says. There's tons of opportunities out there for meeting people. You just need to explore it on your own.
Many people have trouble doing this, but if you put your mind to it it is really not that difficult.
If you drink, you could also go to a bar or something. Grab a beer and shoot the shit. How about conventions? Comic Con, PAX, Anime Expo? I wasn't socially inclined to begin with, yet somehow 3/4ths of my contacts have become convention-goers.

I always wonder: do people actually do this? Alone?
