>oh, and dont forget about the food pyramid they teach you about in health class.
Wait what, that's a lie?
Oh, yeah. It's way overloaded with carbohydrates. Makes you part of the obesity epidemic.
yeppers. thats actually the one we use here in the states. go figure, the people who advocate our food pyramid are the people in the food industry that sell grain. lousy eating. It doesnt even define a serving. Most nutritional experts will warn you not to go by that. The obesity epidemic is what we got after the food pyramid came out in 1992. Thats why our parents and gran parents were thinner. They had real, balanced meals and mandatory gym every year in school. now its only one year of gym in high school and we eat utter crap. most people eat canned garbage like chef boyardee (bleh! i dont allow anyone in my front door with a can of it) or tv dinners like red baron pizza when they dont eat fast food. thats why most of us are fat. Then theres people like me who eat real, wholesome food but our portions are just too fucking big,.

People ARE naturally malicious, ignoble, and corrupt.
All people ARE stupid.

Huh? Are those lies you were told as you were growing up or what?
How the hell don't you learn from your mistakes?
Sure people might be stubborn as hell, but in general, I'd say we learn from our mistakes. You'd have to be dense not to realize that. If you fuck something up and pay the price for it, chances are you're not going to do that again. If you do do it again and, like last time, fuck it up, then you're an idiot.
being headstrong and stubborn is a sign of manliness
Everyone wants to be like america
america is the best country in the world
The American Civil War was fought over Slavery. WWII was fought because of the Holocaust.
If you ignore them, the bullies will leave you alone.
The truth will set you free.
Protip: You can quibble abou states' rights and tyranny and blah blah blah, but the American Civil War was fought over Slavery. Hurkendur.
The South was locked with the North over "Free soil" legislature, and threats of secession were increasingly common to protest their passage. When California became a state in 1850 with overwhelming support for being a "free state," the balance tipped to the free states' favor at last. From this point on, tensions increased dramatically and fights broke out in congress resulting in serious injuries. Before the civil war, there was a lot of civil strife in the Kansas-Nebraska territories, among other places, over precisely the issue of slavery.
Only an ignorant fool can say the Civil War wasn't about slavery. Sure, there were other factors, but without them the Civil War would have still likely taken place. Without the issue of slavery dividing the country, it never would have happened.
Dumb ass.

Dumb ass.
I'm the dumb ass? I said that the Civil War was fought over slavery. I never said that it wasn't involved in the lead up to the war or played an important role in dividing the country. But the Union did not go to war to free the slaves as we are taught in our younger years.
You said "The American Civil War was[n't] fought over slavery."
It, in fact, was.
Now you're saying that the Union didn't go to war to free the slaves. Hey, idiot. The south struck first, at Fort Sumter. It was the South who was the aggressor, and they WERE fighting it over slavery.
Thus, the North went in to quell the rebellion and found a convenient moral argument in anti-slavery.
Slavery was at the core of every aspect of the civil war.
> Hey, idiot.
Classy.
Atheist are bad guys...
Who cares? America ended up losing that war anyway...
People living during the American Civil War didn't call it the "Civil War" -- they referred to it as "The War of Emancipation."
So yes, the war was mainly fought over slavery.
Americans are nice people
> "The War of Emancipation."
Propaganda, man.
America is the best and mightiest country in the world
Europe is a fools dream
Well, it's certainly the mightiest -- at least alongside Russia. It has enough nukes to completely carpet any country it wishes -- or the world.
It just lacks political will. Fortunately.
>>33
I'm not from the US, bright guy, nor am I a fan of the country.
This is today's reality: nuclear stockpiles in the US and Russia dwarf everybody else's. That includes China.
>>31,34
When the amount of times a country can kill everyone on earth over with nukes ever becomes a factor in judging it's military prowess, you just let us know.
Until then, just a few nuclear ICBMs are enough to secure your don't-fuck-with-us status.
Mutual assured destruction, pretty much makes having them worthless... yet NOT having them a weakness.
>>35
It's not a major factor because of lack of political will.
Fortunately.
But one day someone will use them for the lulz, and it will be a sad day.
>>36
that would mean that having nuclear weapons is not worthless.
also, a lie from my childhood: "[America] is a free country".
That we live in a democracy.
Pretty much everything they ever said about drugs and sex in health class.
Just to say, the civil war was fought over the issue of slavery, but it was only an actual war to prevent the south from seceding. The WAR was over keeping the nation together, even though the main issue generating the ideological split was slavery. The war itself was then attributed more directly to the idea of freeing slaves for propaganda purposes (it looks so much nicer than WE DON'T WANT THEM LEAVIN' OUR CLUB BECUS THEY LIEK OWNIN SLAVES BUT WE DUNT).
Actually, a lot of northerners liked the idea of owning slaves as well. It's that "northerner" really meant "urban dweller", and it was inconvenient to own slaves.
Furthermore, while many negros were slaves, there were in fact black slavemasters as well. See:
http://americancivilwar.com/authors/black_slaveowners.htm
for some details about that.
The American Civil War always was about taxation. Washington continued to increase taxes to cover increased armament and social programs that many southerners thought benefitted more urban (northern) populations more. They were probably right, so they formed the confederacy with the goal of seceding from the union, and keeping federal taxation minimal.
The emancipation proclaimation was a kind of a hail-mary play; Lincoln, a white supremecist, became sympathetic with the idea as a means to preserve unity. It worked, but the reprecussions are still felt today- other countries were able to abolish slavery by expiration, something that probably would've done a lot to resolve racial tensions in the US. Instead, using the abolishion as a weapon did nothing to empower blacks, and probably caused more to promote racial segregation than the slavery itself.
>>43
doesn't explain things like bloody kansas and the compromise of 1850.
of course the northerners were horrible people. it was the 19th century, everyone with the exception of a few dozen philosophers and men of letters were human waste. but to say that it wasn't about slavery is a lie.
Yeah, what >>40 said about the drugs and the sex. Also alcohol.
...
And that it wouldn't hurt once I bit the pillow.
>the drugs and the sex. Also alcohol.
Teaching us that legal drugs aren't drugs is a good example of that.
Strange but true: alcohol is one of the few drugs where withdrawal can be lethal.
While each state may have two senators, representatives are based on population, of which the North had over the South by a long-shot. It also didn't help that slaves were only considered 1/3 of a human being in population counts. Whenever policy was decided, the North, having the vastly superior population numbers had a much greater influence than the South, which, for the most part, would have to sit back and take it.
Also, much like today, with the liberal, and conservative split in the U.S., the America of the Civil War also had its own cultural divide; that of the North, and South. They were two very different cultures, and saw each other as such, even though they were very similar when you thought about it.
The industrial revolution was taking effect in a great way during those times in the Northern US, much more so than in the South. Agriculture was giving way to factories, and everyone in Washington knew this was where the money was at. While yes, machines were being developed that would soon make slavery obsolete, they were still a few decades away from being safe, usable, or even cost-effective. The South knew this, they knew slavery was a dying institution, they knew it had to go, but they couldn't give it up just yet. It would destroy the Southern economy! Minimum wage, and unions were still a ways off, so slavery was pretty much the best bet for keeping things running smoothly, as terrible as that sounds. Washington, however, was receiving a lot of pressure from European countries, who had now considered slavery to be an embarrassment, and was ready to get rid of it as soon as possible.
TL;DR
North: Okay, let's introduce some shit that will benefit the northern cities over Southern Rural areas.
South: FUCK YOU, WE'RE SUCCEEDING
North: NO U
"The division of the United States into federations of equal force was decided long before the Civil War by the high finalcial powers of Europe. These bankers were afraid that the United States, if they remained as one block, and as one nation, would attain economic and finacial independense, which would upset their financial domination over the world."
-Otto von Bismark
I was told people will eventually stop arguing about the cause of the Civil War.
>>15
Why so serious? People are easily capable of making the same mistake over and over until the end of their life without even learning from them and of those things learned from mistakes it usually takes several mistakes for them to be bothered to find a way of never making that mistake again.
>>52
My experience is that we make the same mistakes over and over again because they are easy to make. Governments blunder about in familiar patterns, and debates never end with conclusions that are satisfying to anyone.
Religion.
"The Civil War wasn't started over slavery, it was started over lose of control of the legislature [by slave states] and economic issues in the south [caused by their slave economy.]"
Actually I suppose that statement was true, just dumb as hell.
>>39
It is. There's just a difference between freedom and power. You can say or think anything you like here, and do most anything that doesn't endanger yourself or others around you; the fact that you have no direct governmental power is one of the many safety features our founding fathers put into the Constitution to protect this nation from what Jefferson called "tyranny of the majority."
Face it, most people are really, REALLY dumb--that's why the system was designed to make sure that, while their interests and attitudes were reflected in their government, power was kept out of the hands of the mob at all costs. And the day that that ceased to be the case--the day that the electoral college started going with the majority opinion rather than exercising their own judgment--was the day that politics became a dog and pony show. Granted, things are better than they were fifty years ago in that respect--if only because we're a little better educated now--but frankly, if the nation just listened to its best and brightest rather than being swept up in mindless pageantry, we wouldn't be in this mess. And by "this mess," I mean "basically every problem facing this nation right now." The intellectuals predicted the recession, spoke out against the war, voted Gore in 2000, and could have told you that bin Laden fellow was bad news from the moment we started funding him. Hell, if Europe had listened to its collective brain instead of its collective penis and said "You know, fuck these treaties, we're not going to go to war over some Archduke Fuckwad, and Serbia can kiss our bourgeois asses," none of this godawful shit would have happened in the first place! Oh, and Hannibal, nice job with the fucking avalanche! Maybe you could have exercised a little more caution with the fucking elephants in the fucking Alps? But noooooo, you had to be all badass and lose two-thirds of your army, and let whitey turn your entire fucking continent to a series of war-torn, AIDS-ridden fuck-holes! And would it be too much to ask for the damn Hyksos to keep to their fucking selves? You mess with Egypt and your entire religion is gonna get contaminated with all that Osiris bullshit, and then next thing you know there's a guy with a bad combover rounding you up for the Josef Mengele Experimental Fucking Surgery Hour! AND ANOTHER THI-

US takes care of her people.
Americans can trust their government to provide for them.
Equal rights.
Lie: America is not in debt, of course!
Truth: But they're good at sweeping under the rug.
I can be anything i want when i grow up.
There's no racism against white people.
my mom told that those furry orange and black caterpillars could shoot their spines into your eyes leaving you permanently blinded.
Christianity is wrong, atheism is right.
Everyone is essentially rational.
Richard Dawkins knows what he is talking about, rather than being a complete moron who doesn't even understand the concept of fiction.
(I live in the USA and grew up during the 80s and 90s. Not all of these fooled me, but many did and all had an impact. Not all were said ouright, a few were simply strongly implied over and over.)
A few hundred years ago Europe thought the world was flat. Columbus wanted to prove the world was round.
Athiests believe God doesn't exist. Agnostics are people who are not sure what to believe in.
There be witches out there. (Kind of true, but not in the way I was tought.)
The Christian god is just and merciful. When the bible says to 'fear' God, it doesn't mean 'be afraid of' but instead 'respect'. The killing of Egyptian firstborn and such is heartwarmingly wonderful, we must praise God for doing such things OR ELSE.
Sexual fantasies are evil.
America was founded on Christianity, our founding fathers didn't believe in the seperation of church and state.
Religious, political, gender orientation and other such labels can tell you practically all you need to know about a person.
Priests are good sources of advice/guidance. Gay men act like
girls and lesbians act like men. Athiests cannot be ethical. Men are violent and women are emotional, and this applies consistantly to individuals.
America stands for all sorts of good stuff and good actions. (Not always untrue, but not always true either and sets a nationalistic mindset.)
Video games will rot your brain.
Males are not allowed to have any emotion except maybe anger.
Men are more evil than women. Feminists are for equality. Women are still oppressed in the USA.
Some people in this world are not screwed up, you could even be
one of them. Being good means you don't have to worry too much
about how you effect the world as everything would fix itself
if just the bad people knocked it off. Bad people are simple
monsters, they don't love their kids and volunteer at the local
soup kitchen.
Solving the world's problems is easier than attaining the power
to do so.
Many things like religion and politics must be taken very
seriously, it is an insult not to.
Love is an altruistic emotion.
Humans are less respectable/moral than other animals, especially dolphins.
Antidepressants are more than emotional pain-killers and if you need them it is due to a chemical imbalance. In others words: It is definatly your fault and not given simply for the convenience of abusive parents. (Kind of emo, I know. I've left out most stuff like this, but this one definatly belongs in this list.)
Beautiful people are dumb. Smart people are dorks. A healthy body is not all that important for a healthy mind.
Being yourself means doing all you can to be different. You cannot be independant/open minded and generally act normal.
Having strong opinions is good in and of itself. Understanding/admitting your intellectual limits is a weakness.
Police are your friends, they are the good guys.
Police are corrupt, they are the bad guys.
Laws/rules always should be obeyed, period.
Laws/rules are mostly unimportant, just try not to get in trouble.
Whites are responcble for what others who looked like them did. Also somewhat true for the male gender. Doesn't apply to other races/women and thinking otherwise is racist/sexist.
Whites are responcble for what others who looked like them did.
Spelling error aside ...Wait, what? What do you mean "others who looked like them"? Was there some sort of non-white group of people posing as whites and commiting atrocities, just so they could pin the blame on whites? Explain, plz. :3
That it isn't racism to judge or burden people with the history or modern turmoil associated with their race.
That Southern USers generally have a balanced perspective on the US Civil War
That northerners understand climate change
That humans don't affect the climate
That global warming is currently having great impact and chemicals aren't
It's the end of the world or the death of liberty
There is free government in a propaganda/consumerist democracy
good ideas triumph with less than three parties
That conformism is uncommon in democracies, and that those too "radical" must be wrong
That the Middle Country is progressive, that capitalism means political liberty
That X nation is basically free/evil/warmonger/doomed/good cooks/anything more than a collective.
You can trust the media/Paranoia in any degree is insanity
All people want freedom/don't want opportunity/are basically anything (cruel, kind, gregarious, antlike, equal, given chance to succeed)

You knowledge is highly doubtful when you can't even spell it correctly.
Lies huh?
How about this swine flu epidemic?
Actually, it's pointless to mention "lies" or what we think to be lies here. What is true is that when you get skilled at something, for example economics, you'll learn the tricks of economics. Same for marketing, politics, other sciences and stuff. So... be knowledgeable.

Wow, what a totally deluded and insane view of the world.
I agree as well, but I'd still rather buy that crazy man a drink than anyone else in this thread, with the exception of buying one for myself.

Eventually I discovered that was a myth and happily shaved off the pube-ish hairs that grow all the way to my mid thigh.
some of the myths i've been told
