OK, so Georgia has been split apart pretty much since the end of the Soviet Union. The breakaway provinces are all pro-Russian and backed by Russia. Georgia is the one that invaded these provinces as though Russia wouldn't respond. Didn't they know what was going to happen? Did Georgia expect to win? Did they seriously believe the West would be willing to potentially spark WWIII over a few square miles of some backwater ex-Soviet Republic? In my opinion, Georgia got exactly what it deserved for messing with Russia and the West is irresponsible for trying to cover for their mistake.
> the West would be willing to potentially spark WWIII over a few square miles of some backwater ex-Soviet Republic?
Yes, yes they would be willing. But not those few square miles in particular. This is why Georgia still exists; For the few square miles that has a major oil pipeline running through it, Russia would not be so bold.
> Yes, yes they would be willing.
I wonder about that.
Most of the muscle of the West is the US, and the US isn't in any condition to be taking on yet another adversary. This is partly why Russia and China are now pushing their agendas more boldly.
Russia would have to make a massive and blatant land grab, particularly inside the West's sphere of influence, before leaders of the West grew nervous enough to seriously consider something as risky and expensive as a war with Russia.
The Russians aren't stupid. Putin is definitely not stupid. Instead we'll probably see more subtle "wars by other means" like this one. I don't know why Georgia did something this idiotic, but it looks like Russia has been setting up their pieces for over a decade and waiting for the opportunity.
I'd be happy if someone who knew more about this could elaborate or correct on the above.
It's refreshing to hear that people don't only believe Georgia was the innocent victim here.

If you read anything other than US news, you get a decent picture pretty soon.
I think the situation in Georgia is going to start a second Cold War, and if the Nazi movement growing in Moscow starts getting serious backing by Russian politicians then we could indeed be facing WW3. The minutes are getting closer to midnight.

Nazi movement? Oh lawd. That is such a remote possibility that I can only reply like this.

????????????
Nazbol is a big opposition group. The idea of the existing Russian power kotowing to them is ridiculous, but they exist and are tolerably significant.
