Addicted to maths (36)

Being addicted to maths is the worst thing you could ever get addicted to. You start spacing out during the day thinking about maths. You don't realise that you spend several hours researching maths because you enter some kind of trance, so absorbed in your work that you forget to eat and you can't hear your concerned mum knocking on the door. Once you learn a certain amount, it becomes increasingly difficult to get the same satisfaction, so you try to compensate by doing it more, faster. The sad thing is, most of the time your work isn't proportional to how you achieve in school. The best paying job you can get by studying pure maths is a teacher, where you help others become addicted to maths. I hate being addicted to maths.

Yes, I know. Don't be a pussy.

4 Name: Anonymous Scientist : 2008-02-08 20:52 ID:Heaven

Doesn't it happen the same with philosophy?

That's a gateway discipline.

More or less. While we're on the subject, I'd consider maths to be the cocaine of academia.

anyone addicted to maths should be kind to themselves, and immediately take enough drugs to render them incapable of doing maths ever again.

Don't diss the OP. It's surely less expensive than being addicted to drugs! If he enjoys it, and he's harming no one, why not?

THINK OF THE POLYNOMIALS!
WHY WONT SOMEBODY THINK OF THE POLYNOMIALS?

i study applied math and im not even out of undergrad and ive already made 6k off of math in less than a year.

math is a versatile subject if you study applied stuff. it makes you like an engineer only higher up on the food chain. more intelligent, flexible problem solvers is what we are.

12 Name: Anonymous Scientist : 2008-03-05 15:04 ID:Heaven

>more intelligent, flexible HUMONGOUS NERDS is what we are.

fix'd

Say, how did you get that 6k?

If he told you, he'd have to make sure the real-valued limit of the path of a knife as it approaches your body is somewhere deep in your heart.

I'm terrible at math, but I can see myself being addicted to it. If I weren't such a sore loser and hated everything I wasn't good at I'd be a meth whore....I mean math.

On a somewhat related note, can someone help me improve my math skills? I am retarded when it comes to numeracy. It's quite embarrassing.

Become skilled with Algebra and Algebra II to the point where you don't have to think to solve polynomials in different settings (division, square roots, exponents, multiplication, etc)., Ignore Geometry, then start learning the concepts of Calculus if you're confident you can solve simple things like functions and compositions of functions. It'll take you a while, but if you start with algebraic operations (even as review), you'll have a much better grasp of math entirely.

>I'm terrible at math

What the call "math" in school has nothing to do with what academics in the field spend their time on.

This guy says it best:

True.

But I didn't need to read that paper to know why I love music, math, and why I am fluent and extremely creative in both without even a month of formal training in either. Making students wait until they're able to compose music is the most crippling thing ever. Teaching music and math as symbols is crippling and stupid. Both subjects, as the absolute fundamentals of all artistic reasoning, should be taught side by side...

What I meant was basically 'teach synaesthesia', because we all know that genius is the multitude of association.

Just take math day by day, like a pill. Keep thinking about it, but in a unique way each time, but don't obsess over it. It helps if you organize and keep track of time.
