Ok I had planned to buy a new PC,but I cannot afford it. So I felt I should just upgrade my current PC to fit the little needs that I have.First off I want to run half life 2...not uber grand,or as crisp as it can be...just to be able to play it. My current speed is 700MGHZ Celeron, and I have 612MB of ram.
Ok, so I want to update to a P4 3.0ghz or some odd lower,Or something similar and I'm looking at cost. I want budget to stay between $300 to $500. I also dont want Celeron,Ive had one on my past two PC's and it feels like they just degrade and get slower over time.
I was looking at newegg.com And this is what I have found and I dont kno a thing about processors or Motherboards.
So I'd like to know if the processors will work with this board:

Here are the processors I have picked out:

http://www.newegg.com/app/ViewProductDesc.asp?description=19-116-171R&depa=0
http://www.newegg.com/app/ViewProductDesc.asp?description=19-116-171&depa=0
I'd also like to look into AMD's but seeing how they dont state there speed I dont know witch is the best.
Any help anyone can give will help me greatly.
Thanks in advanced.
Your better off getting and AMD system, here is what i recommend for your price point:
CPU:

Mobo:

I also recommend this video card:

wtf is a sempron? never heard of it :\
Sempron is an AMD Processor, cut down. Think of it as a Duron, except they do a lot more things to weaken the processor. And unlike the Duron, you can't bridge mod.
Sempron? FAILURE
Do not buy a Semperon. It's AMD playing a cruel and terrible joke.
For a mere $20 more, get this beauty:

It makes a world of difference... less heat, more potential to overclock, etc. etc.
Also, you'll need RAM. Because the RAM you currently have will not work in said board.
Frankly, there isn't much at all you can use regular SDRAM in anymore... so that's like $90 right there for 512MB of PC3200.
A Sempron is simply a renamed athlon xp throughbred and performs about the same.
I was mearly suggesting a system that will work well for a good price out of the box, and getting that xp 2400 will cost a bit extra because you need to spend money on a heatsink since its OEM while the cpu i mentioned is retail and comes with heatsink.
Barton > Thouroughbred
512k of cache vs. 256k makes a huge difference.
At the same price of a Barton core AXP nowdays (with heatsink) your better off spending a little bit more for a A64.
A64>>>>AXP Barton
A64 necessitates more expensive motherboards, unfortunately. Currently, you don't want the A64 motherboards that cost less than $80 or so. Seriously.
Things will change once the NForce4 is spread far and wide. :-)
So? When you think about it almost ANY mobo that cost less than $80 sucks.
Cheapo ECS boards with SiS chipsets have worked perfectly for me (except when a DVD case slipped behind my computer and blocked the power supply fan, bursting some capacitors) but apparently this experience is unique to me.
>SiS chipsets
You fail at life.
Well, NForces have shit Linux support and VIA's are even worse. Any remaining alternatives?
Go Intel.

NForces have shit Linux support? What are you on? My nForce works great on a 2.6.x kernel.
