ugh, i just bought a powerbook g4 and now im hearing all this hype of apple unveiling something new tomorrow. i could've waited till tomorrow to post but jesus im too upset. it's most likely going to be a new powerbook with an intel chip or something and i'll have to go through the hassle (assuming i can) exchange my laptop for the new version. plus, will it even be worth an exchange? tiger os x.4 is still having compatibility problems with certain programs, should i be so quick to exchange for another upgrade? of course i won't know for sure what apple will unveil until tomorrow. whatever. end.
wait for the unveiling then make your decision.
I have like 2 weeks to return and make an exchange
FFS do your research before you drop money on a big purchase. This is especially true for personal electronics where product cycles are short and the feature bumps can be huge.
The product announced is going to be a video iPod with increased storage which is also a tablet-based Mac that can communicate with a more powerful base-station-like Mac over Bluetooth and 802.11e (that's right, e) to download videos from the new iTunes Video Store and now it will apparently be a Pentium-based laptop as well.
In other words, nobody and everybody knows what the announced product would be. Personally, I wouldn't sweat it.
i usually do my research before major purchases, but this time i just needed a quick, very expensive, temporary solution for happiness. hah. why a mac? i need it to run peak audio editing software. but anyway, i guess it works out for now.
So it's a video iPod, and an incredibly rushed release of "iTunes 6", which is just the exact same thing as iTunes 5 with support for buying videos, and a dependence on Quicktime 7.0.3, which hadn't even been released when I downloaded the new iTunes.
Rumor has it that Apple rushed it because someone else was going to steal their thunder. Overall, lame.
Hrmm, now I'm wondering what this 802.11e is. Also, it'll be interesting to see what other companies will try to push out to "one up" Apple.
(Hrmm, and I wonder if this "video iPod" uses a similar StrongARM-based architecture like the earlier iPods? Linux ViPod anyone?)
According to the internet 802.11e was QoS for 802.11a and 802.11b, if that's the case I wonder what 802.11g and 802.11n are using...
Ok, these are just about the worst technology designations I have ever seen.
Get me a 27b/6, stat!
Apple has just announced new Power Macs and PowerBooks... However, the PowerBooks just have bigger screens. The guts haven't been touched, frustratingly.

if memory serves me correctly 802.11e is the new wireless mesh networking protocol.
Its VERY neat! It allows you to hop from wifi connection to wifi connection until you reach an internet line.
To give you an illustration: you're too far away from a hotspot to get a connection, but there's someone else between you and the hotspot. With 802.11e you'll be able to recieve a connection by connecting through the intermediary.

Actually the screen sizes are about the same. The only difference is that the new macs have higher resolution screens.
Indeed. My mistake. It would be kinda crazy for Apple to top the almost impractical seventeen-incher they've got out now; I mean, damn, that's almost as big as my massive tool.
(It's a wrench firefighters use to open up fire hydrants.)
Apparently, that is not nearly enough compensating for some people:
