Flash Drive Fight (10)

Hey, I want to get some opinions here. There's a couple of Black Friday sales on the Sandisk Cruzer and PNY Attache USB flash drives. I really would rather get a Lexar JumpDrive Lightning for its on-drive security features, but for the prices that are being offered ($80 for a 2gb USB flash drive? YA RLY) I think I can suffice.

So does anyone have any recommendations/warnings/cautions about either? This thing is going to be carried everywhere on my keychain. What I want to do is get some sort of flash drive security software that password-protects it and works on IBM PC computers.

My flash drive is an Apacer Handy Steno HT-202 and it works great. It uses USB and has about 256 MB of storage space. I've had it about, oh, a year, as of now.

That is all I know about flash drives, though. Sorry I can't be of further assistance.

What exactly are the "on-drive security features" mentioned in the original post?

I'm the person who posted item #4 above. I just went to the Lexar web site and got the answer to my own question. The answer (copied from the Lexar web site) is below.

--------------------------------------

SECURITY

* Create password-protected and public areas on the JumpDrive. This allows users to easily share files, and at the same time prevent access to sensitive or private information.
o Public area has no password protection and is accessible by anyone using the JumpDrive.
o Private area is password-protected so no one can open, copy or write files to the drive without entering the correct password.
* For additional security encrypt and decrypt any file on your computer or JumpDrive using AES 256-bit encryption.

What >>5 pasted, but without the retarded non-wrapping formatting.

FWIW, I've had very good luck with the SanDisk Cruzers; even sent one through the washer and dryer (accidentally) and it still works just fine.

Circuit City posted an ad for the Lexar JumpDrive Secure II, and it's doing exactly what I want it to do. The security software works great at work and on my lappy. Seems to be a good one so far!

I bought a Sandisk Cruzer 256 the other day, and am very happy with it. Haven't had a chance to test out the security software yet, but I'll try that later and post the results.

All flash drives are created equal; it's a few flashram chips soldered onto a board with a usb memory -> ata controller. Use truecrypt http://www.truecrypt.org/ if you want security (goes for anything else you have that you want to hide; of course, password should be strong...).
