Windows VISTA (15)

Does anyone know when it will be released to public? Any rumors?

It's slated to be released in September this year. They've stripped out Avalon, WinFS, precaching technologies, DX10, etc. all the features that would have made it interesting. All it has is a new UI based on DX9.1, and a couple of new (undocumented) network modules to make life hell for other OS developers. Oh, and shit directly lifted from OSX/Linux.

Overall it'll be shit.

Windows Vista: ME all over again?

I'd be interested in >>3 elaborating. I can't tell if they're serious or not.

3 here.

Being serious. When Microsoft announced Vista they had all these new technologies which would have been actually awesome and innovative. Avalon, a new fast, lightweight replacement for DCOM. WinFS, a meta-filesystem which could have been faster than XFS for large files and ReiserFS for small files. SuperCache, which would have cut application loading times by nearly half. DX10, which was supposed to be released with Vista having brand new, light-weight technologies and stripped down for raw performance.

All drawn up in whitepapers.

All scrapped as of Q3 2005.

Now all they've done is apparently fuck around with the SMB protocol, add a new hack to replace UPnP, replace GDI+ with some DX9 wrapper, and ripped off every damn section of Apple's iLife suite, Apple's Spotlight and usability improvements found in most recently Linux distributions.

It's WinXP SP3, not a new operating system.

>>3 is right, and there's really nothing surprising about this. ANybody who's followed Microsoft product releases should be familiar with this already. Microsoft always announces crazy, revolutionary new features, and then slowly and quietly scales back most of them before releasing another iterative upgrade.

I remember them doing this for Windows 95. Somebody else mentioned ME. It's standard operating procedure.

So will they ever pick those Avalon, WinFS stuff ever again and release it later on in the year for people to download?

I wouldn't hold my breath.

Oh, my. I never expected much from WinFS, since they've been promising that thing for years (and years, and years).

Yet just last week there was that kowtow over at extremetech, advertising all the tech mentioned in >>6, so I thought it was actually a done deal. It ain't so, huh?

What about the DRM? I'll wager that's made it.

Vista delayed again. 3D Realm declares Duke Nukem Forever to be release in May. Critics agree that Bush will be in office for another two years.

Avalon is still going to be included, last I heard. WinFS is either months away from a second Beta or is going to be scrapped, so it's safe to say it's vaporware.

Vista eats up 800 megs of ram when it's idle!!! http://www.theinquirer.net/?article=30128

There's nothing I like more than mocking Vista, but in this case, the article is just bullshit. It's been many, many years since "memory usage" was anything you could get a quick intuitive grip on. With virtual memory, system caches, and various kinds of dynamic loading, memory usage is very non-trivial to measure or understand.

And a page file usage of 820 megs definitely does not mean what they imply it does.
