Hey, I'm planning to buy a new compy, since my old compaq at 450 mhz it's just teh shit, I want it for advanced gaming (not too demanding though) media, etc... it has the following specs:

1 GB DDR400 CORSAIR RAM PC3200
160 GB MAXTOR HD
ATI RADEON X1300 256 MB PCI-E GRAPHICS CARD

If someone could give me suggestions about which processor is better for gaming (single threaded) and media (multi threaded) apps.
AMD 64 3500+ 2.2 GHZ or
AMD X2 3800+ 2.0 GHZ DUAL CORE

I get the 3500+ for 1,000 USD and the X2 3800+ for 1,300 USD

It's a nice workstation, 17" 1280 x 1024 lcd monitor and that... but I really need some suggestions about the processor

They're both high grade systems and will both be more than adaquet for both gaming and media apps.

That said, I heard that Pentium based CPUs were better with media programs,a nd AMD for gaming, but that was years ago before the X2 (and mind you, the difference was minor.)

If you think the $300 more is worth it, go with the X2. It's probably better then the 3500+.

As for me, my 64 3200+ is doing fine.

PS. I found an article for you at one my favorite sites: http://www.anandtech.com/cpuchipsets/showdoc.aspx?i=2484

They recommend the 3800+ if you can afford it, if you don't feel like reading through the whole thing.

Thanks, i'll go with the X2 3800+, and I hope this processor handle games and apps in 2 years (like the AMD XP's still handle most apps today), by the way, do any of you know if this processor is compatible with windows vista? if not, i think i'll just stay with xp sp2...

Err... yes, it should be. I installed Vista (well, an early Longhorn alpha) on a PII Celeron a few years ago.

Took like 5 hours to install, and was slow as hell, but it worked.

The only thing it might not work on is a Mac.
