i was recently given a power macintosh 4400/200 with system 7.5.3 on it. i have install cds for mac os 8.6 and 9.1.
should i stick with 7.5.3 or upgrade to 8.6 or 9.1?
That machine is plenty capable of running 9.1. Go for it.
If you're up for it, though, I'd consider running a lightweight yet more modern OS -- not a whole lot of new software is coming out for OS 9 nowadays. It appears that http://www.netbsd.org/Ports/macppc/ will run on your hardware.

i already have several (x86) freebsd machines, and a quadra 650 running A/UX. i figured i'd try something that's not unix on this machine.
i found very little difference in the OS's for mac until X this being from an avid mac user for 15 years. Not that there were no differences, just that I could care less about most of them. wouldn't 7.5.3 work faster on an old machine? I can't imagine running 9.1 on my old powerbook
ok, i tried installing OS 9 and it said i don't have enough memory to run the installer (the machine only has the 16MB it originally came with).
i guess i'll try getting some more memory (should be able to get it for free or pretty cheap)...

That's true, but newer software will obviously require a newer OS. If you want to run software from 1994 on your OS from 1994, go right ahead, but if you upgrade to 9 you'll at least be able to run a few things made this decade.
http://www.icab.de is a fairly decent browser which is still being developed for OS 8.5 and later.
