I am thinking there are probably some pretty smart guys here on 4-ch so maybe you guys can help.
Okay, about a year ago my built-in USB ports suddenly stopped working. The memory card ports no longer show up under My Computer like they used to, and when I plug a device into any of the USB ports, the computer doesn't respond. However, the devices I plug in still receive power. I've tried reinstalling countless times, and my USB drivers are up-to-date. I've also tried turning off the power-saving option.
My opinion is that this isn't a hardware problem, because I have built-in USB ports on the front AND the back of the tower, and they don't seem to be connected in any way hardware-wise, yet neither of the groups are functioning.
Most recently I tried plugging in an XBox 360 controller and a graphics tablet. No response, but the controller and tablet still received power as usual. However, I noticed that the lights on the devices blinked every few seconds. This is unusual, since the 360 controller normally only blinks once when you plug it in and never lights up again, and the tablet normally stays lit at all times. (I tried the 360 controller again yesterday and this time it blinked once and never lit up again like it should when I plugged it in the back, and when I tried the front port it stayed lit, not blinking at all. But still no response from the PC).

Any help is GREATLY appreciated. I'm completely stumped!
Also, based on what other people have asked me:
try using a linux live cd such as knoppix. you can use the live cd to rule out if the problem is an operating system problem
