Firefox 2 (17)

Has anyone tried it yet? I've been waiting for it to stabilize before upgrading. Have the memory leaks been fixed? Are there any serious known security issues? How's the performance?

I use Firefox 2 at home and 1.5 at work. I can't tell the difference between speed and memory usage. 2 is working great for me. I love the inline spell checker.

I'm using 1.5, because I am too lazy to update... Though I've used 2.0 and there son't seem to be any Problems with it. Also, Mozilla released a patch that fixes lots of holes and bugs today.

Ha, I'm still using v1.0. Nice and stable, why should I upgrade?

Gentoo has just moved to 2.0.0.1, which is a security-fixed version of 2.0. So if you're going to upgrade, this is the version I'd recommend.

That said, some of us are stuck on 1.5 because 2.0 won't compile or won't work on our systems. (I still need to port Firefox 2.0 to Linux/MIPS.)

>>5 Some/many(?) of these fixes are fixes for later versions than v1.0, it's hard to tell what fixed what.
Also, I disabled a lot of crap in about:config.
Also, many of my must-have plugins don't work with later versions, and there have no updates in sight.
Also, I use a webfilter program before passing pages to Firefox.
I tried v1.5 when it came out, didn't like it, went back to v1.0.
My only complain is that the newer plugins are "1.5 and above", even the plugin that bypasses the version check of plugins. :(

Is there a good flash blocker for 2.0.0.1?

Adblock ( http://adblock.mozdev.org/ ) blocks flash and pretty much everything else one would want to block.

That's good, but does it work properly with the newest Firefox?

Mixing filterset.g and Adblock Plus apparently might cause slowdowns in older hardware, like mine.

filterset.g is hueg as xbox. spend time learning regex so you can build your own filter. I managed to make my list only 7 lines long.

sure, since you asked nicely. My rules for filtering are:

  • some tolerance for false positives
  • I will tolerate looking at ads if it will keep the list as small as possible
  • I tend not to block site specific ads unless the ads are coming from an advertiser's domain.

This list is for you >>16. I'm providing this list as it is. I am not going to provide an update service because I'm too lazy to set one up and maintain it. Just copypasta the list into a blank text file then import the file into adblock. I anonymous of the internet hereby release this list of filters to the public domain.
