Total n00b about torrents, very basic question I feel foolish for asking. Could someone explain (or point me in the direction of a good explanation) about how they work, anything I need to know, etc. Whenever I try to download one it goes impossibly slow, is there some kind of trick to it? Also, what about security, are they safe?
open ports 6881-6889
I need more detail than that, and I'm not going to blindly follow some anonymous person on the internet so could you provide a link to an explanation (so I know what you're telling me is valid advice)?
uTorrents tutorials are quite good, no matter what client you are using: http://utorrent.com/guides.php
And there's always wikipedia of course: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/BitTorrent

And let every ISP along the way throttle you, right. A port in the range of say 20000 to 30000 makes more sense (Pretty much any newer client can work with several torrents on one port, anyways).

|TRACKER|
|LEACH| |LEACH| |LEACH| |LEACH| |idiot|
you download a "torrent file" off a website, the torrent has the address of a "tracker" server, which is basicly a webserver in it, allong with a code to make sure the files you download come out right.
You run a program like bitcomet, open the torrent file with it, it registers your computer with the tracker and the tracker tells it some other people downloading. people downloading are called leaches, people not downloading but still connected (uploading) are called idiots.
Your computer procceeds to rape idiots and also take stuff off other leaches.
NB: if your asking the question you wont be able to make it anonymous or encrypted.
