Who here has mastered drawing digitally with a tablet?

What tablet do you use? What program do you use? What kind of art do you do?
How long have you been practicing drawing digitally?

...Okay, let me rephrase the question.

Who here has mastered drawing digitally with a WACOM tablet?

What program do you use? What kind of art do you do?
How long have you been practicing drawing digitally?

>Who here has mastered drawing digitally with a WACOM tablet?

Me. But "mastered" is a big word. I could always improve.

>What program do you use?

Anything and everything that can draw a line.

>What kind of art do you do?

Whatever I feel like. I don't want to be bound to a specific style.

>How long have you been practicing drawing digitally?

A couple of years. But it takes only a couple of days at most to get used to it.

Just buy a cheap 4x5 Wacom and see if you like it.

OP here, I have a wacom tablet ready for use, it's just that I want to know how long it usually takes for one to get used to digital drawing. That way I can see how much work I need to do for how long to get a decent result.

I know some people have gotten quite good at it, but I find drawing digitally quite difficult. Coloring and painting is a different matter, but I think there's something to be said for drawing analog and then scanning, at least for the initial sketch/gesture/outline.

It shouldn't take longer than a few hours of actual use to get a hang of your tablet, but it might take more practice to get comfortable sketching from scratch the way you do on paper. It's quite possible, and I've done it, but it tends to be slower and more awkward than on paper. For inking/coloring/retouching/highlighting though, there's nothing better, and I can "paint" from scratch pretty convincingly with Painter IX and Photoshop.
Most of the challenge probably will be in learning the software, not the tablet, Painter is generally harder and more stupid to use than Photoshop, but has better brushes. I've tried the prototypical Systemax Sai

and liked it a lot, very easy and intuitive to use, but it only has a few brushes, still it's great for CG or manga inking.

OP here again.

I got Painter IX and love it more than Photoshop so far. I really wanted something to help me rotate the canvas, and Painter IX has it. I find drawing a bit difficult because I need to get used to be able spin the canvas.

remember that digital painting is not going to help you if you suck on paper.

I use a Wacom Graphire 4 on my laptop -- and have mastered it reasonably well.

But it's worth noting, I use mine for technical drawing during engineering lectures -- I'm not much of an artist. Mice just don't cut it for me.

openCanvas1.1 also allows rotating of the canvas.
